Your repair is off to a pretty good start. The reason why you have to “seal off” the damaged drywall paper is because if you apply mud over unsealed torn paper it will absolutely bubble the brown paper underneath the white paper. Ask me how I know. I’ve always used Bullseye shellac out of a can. If you have a small area just use a foam brush. If you have a larger area use a non-foam 1/4” nap roller cover. The shellac will eventually attack the foam brush, so work with either depending the size of the repair. I usually do two coats. Use a fan and pop a window if your repair area is large. I use a gray scuff pad In between the two coats, maybe 20 minutes apart. I use 320 sandpaper before the first coat of mud. 8” is the smallest knife I use. Last coat is applied with a 10” or 12” knife depending on the condition of the rest of the wall. After a real light sanding, prime & paint. You’ll never know it was damaged.

Thank you for your video. We just moved into our rental, which was trashed by our tenants. Come to find out, it's impossible to take off silicone on drywall. It cost me so much money to try and repair it myself. So your video helped me do it the right way. Thank you.

I had a crappy peel & stick wallpaper that tore up my walls so this is helpful. I only used a 10x10 square to test it luckily but ugh such a pain.

I can confirm that good primer is important

I use Roman RX-35 for problem area. No smell and never failed me. If removing wallpaper, roll the whole wall with the RX-35 and you are set.

Hi Jay, Good info. I can never get the hot mix mixed right, I always add too much water the first time. 😀 Eric.
