Body integrity identity disorder is a condition in which a healthy person believes that he or she is meant to be disabled. People with this condition often seek to harm themselves to attain their desired disability. I can understand that this lady wants to be blind. But drain cleaner in her eyes to ruin her My daughter was born blind in one of her eyes and I would give my left arm, and I am left handed to have her see again. This lady could have donated the eyes or parts of them to help someone like my lovely daughter, NO, I'd give my left eye to have my daughter see again. This was reckless by her and her doctor. He could have sent her to an eye doctor to have her eyes transplanted to someone like my daughter or someone in a terrible accident. I feel like the lady doctor on this video. My hands are shaking as I write this. I believe this is a travesty to the blind community. I have to stop writing this because I'm afraid to say something I'll regret. God bless. If anyone is thinking of doing something like this, please at least give your "disability" to someone who could use it, don't waste that opportunity to help someone fix the disability you wish to have. It's funny because Dr.Phil is totally on her side and Dr.Travis is like how can you protect someone like this

The person who ‘helped’ her 100% sounds like he just wanted to hurt someone

She literally just sat there with her mouth open the entire time while everybody else talked about her. I don't know that blindness is her biggest problem

This is a perfect example of why you should treat mental illness, rather than reinforce or enable it to continue. My guess, that psychologist really didn't know anything about her, she probably read his work or something and obsessed over it. Then after she blinded herself, she HAD to find someone to blame so then she could be the misunderstood victim.

She should pay for her own healthcare and whatever help she needs as far as blindness

I truly hope this woman is happy with her decision cause what she did is not reversible. I hope that she is honest with herself when she says she doesnt regret. Truly sad. I will never understand what her disorder is like. But she is not a victim in my eyes.

I was born with a physical disability, but I can walk. I would do anything to be able to walk for long periods of time without exhaustion. I would be appalled and offended if anyone made themselves disabled just for the benefits or whatever excuse they may have. Stuff like this is inexcusable and these people need help.

if she was basically already "blind" without her glasses on why didn't she just leave them off and be blind that way? instead of hurting herself ? I just don't get it ...

I finally found what I find offensive about the blonde woman's behavior: the fact that she is going to talk about Jewl in her presence without ever speaking directly to her, as is he Jewl was too much of a fool to be able to speak for herself. Also... why doesn't anybody ask her why did she feel the need to blind herself..

It's not a disorder. I feel like I had a slight version of this growing up. I think it is a cry for attention that festers and becomes a obsession. Being unique is intoxicating and pity is the most tragic and romantic version. I think it's that plus it's a cop out for failure. I lied about having bad eyesight to get glasses as a kid and i pretended to have ADD so I had an excuse to not do well. I thought about breaking my arm when I saw people come to class with casts on and got all the attention. I realized how petty it is when I got a bit older but I can see people getting addicted to that but maybe I'm way off.

and why does the female doctor go on and on about her taking ownership for whats she done? Is the patient regretting her decision or something? from what i know, she doesn't. so why is this doctor projecting her own believes to us all? makes no sense. she's really talking from emotions rather than a sensible, level headed doctor on a show.

I disagree with many of the comments. The blonde doctor was making sense. Mutilating your body is NOT normal. For crying out loud, have we become a society so far removed from reality that we see nothing wrong with this? And don't say "they are only hurting themselves" because they're not. She went to an ER for treatment. She had surgeries. She continues to see a doctor for eye issues, all because of HER actions. We have to pay for this with higher premiums and out of pocket costs or taxes, if she didn't have insurance. Is she going to claim disability now too? Another good question. Someone who really is blind and disabled is getting the same benefits as someone who purposely took her own sight? I don't want the money I work for to go to her, not one penny. How many other mentally unstable people are going to see this and decide to do it? How many young people with mental health issues will see this and use it as a cry for attention? It's also telling when people say well this is wrong but chopping off your penis and testicles so you can be a "woman" is ok. No, it's not any different. I know that's not PC but the truth isn't always PC. This is an example of the slippery slope we are on as a society and common sense and reality are not allowed in it.

In 20 years this will be a thing and everyone will applaud people like her, for being true to what they identify. The same thing what dr Phil and the doctors say it was said against lgbtq people some years ago.

That doctor seemed so ignorant and just doesn't even try to understand anything

Why didn't she just blind fold herself and pretend she was blind? Now she's dependent on others.

The blonde lady is making the false dichotomy fallacy. It is possible to admit partial fault in a situation. There is no contradiction in saying "I shouldn't have gone about it in the way I did, but I also don't think he should have assisted me in doing so." I am not necessarily saying that this is the case, but I am saying the blonde woman's statement is not true. (And also, a licensed doctor should have much better judgment in this specific situation than a person with struggling with the severe disorder that fuels the specific situation, might I add).

People are saying the lady should have donated her eyes. Sure, chances are the poor woman would have donated her eyes if she had the mind to reason and do so! Where is our empathy! Dig deeper, and try see things from HER perspective, imagine having a mind that perceives like hers. I wish her a good life.
