1700 grains*. This is a bullet weight measurement.

Imagine someone firing .454 Magnum at you on full auto... while sprinting at you in tank armor

For people wonder about the extreme discrepancies it’s rather simple. The idea of the bolter was written first and then latter some one with little to 0 knowledge on firearms or even the physics and chemistry behind it wrote the lore entry explaining how it works.

Reminder that boltgun rounds are supposed be mach 8 .75cal with a mass-reactive HE filler. Astartes shows pretty well what that'd do to a pathetic human

The size of the round isn't the part that's supposed to scare you.

Its that a rate of fire of being mag dumped by about 30 of them in a few seconds.

Honestly the more people dig into warhammer weapon power measuring, the more I realize the whole «warhammer vs [insert universe]» debates may not actually be so one-sided. The militarum’s propaganda has been quite effective

That's only a Raven Guard bolt. Regular stalker bolts are supersonic and use deuterium. The Raven Guard mercury stalker bolt is for assassinating unarmored, unaugmented targets at extreme range with minimal audio report. If you want to review a better sniper rifle, check out the one used by the new Alpha Legion unit, or even the one used by Vindicare Assassins.

Expect not all stalkers fire the Raven Guard pattern Mercury bolt.

People also tend to forget not only all the crazy bolter variants, but the all kinds of insane ammunition it can use. Like how about highly toxic/corrosive ammo? Incendiary? Ammo that can transfer... Psychic energy??? Yeah, I believe they have those too. And you can shoot those from a "standard" bolter.

The first marine isn't using a Stalker bolt rifle. He's using a MK3 Shrike Pattern Bolt Sniper Rifle, they use different rounds.

Just remember this is the equivalent of a caveman throwing rocks and imagining an M2

Except standard rounds are rocket propelled which entirely changes the kinetic energy being delivered. Also, how can you just say “oh yeah, it’s an explosive, it’ll do roughly the same damage” that makes no sense at all and feels like a half-assed assertion.

The problem is, the people who wrote the 40k lore have 0 clue how weapons work, let alone how to design ones that would function IRL how they describe. Bolters tear through tank level armor, and that Big game hunting round isn't tearing through light armor, let alone a tank. Hell, the AdMech cannonically doesn't even know how these weapons work, and they're maintaining them. They just know how to keep them from becoming useless. These weapons were invented so long ago that no one knows how 99% of the Imperium's weapons work.

TLDR: We can't rely on their measurements for lore-accurate weapons when you're designing weapons with no knowledge how real ones work, let alone in a universe full of space magic.

Somehow i doubt that an explosive shell the size of his face would do the same amount of damage as that little thing

It's not stalker on the sniper at the beginning of the video. It's eliminator squad bolt sniper rifle. It's a whole different beast.
Stalker bolter is basically non-rapid fire scoped Goodwin-pattern-esque bolter, adapted to different type of ammo.

I do have to point out the ridiculousness of assuming a regular bolter shell doesn't hit any harder, considering that just compressed gas is very different from a full blown rocket motor and lauching charge. Standard bolts absolutely are supersonic, and the explosive makes ALOT of difference given that they are described as blowing off limbs or blowing apart torsos. This shouldn't be surprising as a bolt is about .75 cal, so having someone fire a bolter at you is only slightly less bad than having a 20mm autocannon with APHE rounds pointed your way

I will also point out the weapon you showed is not a Stalker Bolter, but rather a Shrike Bolt Sniper Rifle which is very different.

Always remember we’re using sci-fi materials here. Adamantine casing and such. I’m not sure how big of a difference such things would make but it’s always worth noting.

Yeah as confident as you are they have an internal combustion system that only engages after it leaves the barrel which you couldn’t possibly account for.

I was thinking "Damn lobbing a nearly 2kg projectile at near sonic speeds should do a LOT more" before reading the pinned comment.
