I think he’s the greatest autistic wrestler America has seen in the last 50 years

When I was a kid, I went to a dual meet between two local rival high schools. There were two fights in the stands and then the dual came down to the final match. In this match, the two heavyweights got into a fracas and then the guy from the school I would be attending pinned the other guy. This was how I got interested in wrestling.

DeSantis needs to grow up! From a retired wrestler.

Desanto plays chess while the others are playing checkers. He goes after your concentration and mental focus as much as your legs.

I grew up wrestling in Iowa(Tom & Terry kicked my butt for 4 years), this has been a rivalry for years. The Hawk's are a very in your face program. ISU was always the little brother but have showed in the last 10 years they have earned a seat at the table. It is what it is; there is trash talking anyone that has wrestled at this level "hates to lose more than you want to win". DeSanto reminds me of the Brands brothers in high school. That is total commitment to the sport, he picked the right school there is none better than this.

Shame on Brands for inciting that unsafe and unsportsmanlike conduct, instead of stepping in to stop the momentum of the wrestlers and defuse the situation.

I watched most of his matches as an Iowa fan. He's exciting to watch and likes to talk during tough matches.

But if some of his behavior seems bizarre (like the carry to the table, or the post-match jumping up and down) there is a major factor a lot of ppl might not know. He's on the spectrum with autism. He was more and more open about it throughout his Iowa career and said it's a constant battle he tries to live with. If you've ever been around someone with autism they will frequently focus on something so intensely that their emotions and actions unrelated to their focus can just sort of happen without them even realizing it.

You can still have your opinions on the guy. He almost cost Iowa a meet once and got suspended by Brands for one of his outbursts. When he transferred in Brands knew he had a very difficult task and did an admirable job. And for what it's worth, after Austin had time to decompress post-match he almost always gave praise and credit to his opponent.

He wrestles with a constant in-your-face intense style, but never blamed his actions on his disability. But if you watched enough of him, the moment intense/feisty DeSanto turned into bizarre/regrettable behavior DeSanto were easier and easier to see.

I'm pulling for him on his wrestling journey. He could be a massive role model if he ever gets famous in the WWE/UFC to young kids on the autism spectrum knowing it's possible to harness their emotions on the biggest stage.

I’m 100% for good sportsmanship but have always for Desanto very entertaining. My own internal conflict.

It’s been 20 years since Iowa St has beaten Iowa in wrestling. It’ll likely be many more till they finally do, so naturally their fans and athletes are going to be upset and tensions will be high.

A lot of this came from the fact that the Brands and Kevin Dresser can't stand each other.

Come on, at least learn the "Iowa state wrestlers" name, if you are gonna say it so much. Come on.

People get all cramped when you have a combat sport get out of hand.

Thank God for the UFC.

Have enough respect to learn both their names.

It’s just to athletes going head to head, this sport is physical. Stop making it out to more than it is. Move on seriously.

Iowa fans 96% of the state. The other school- well tbh no one really cares outside of Ames

Austin is a really good wrestler but i don't like his cockyness/unsportmanlikeship wrestling shouldn't be known for that both wrestlers should have respect for each other

Referee failure to do his job properly. You see behavior starting to escalate, you stop it. Ref gets an F.
