macOS Sonoma 14.4: Updating My Unsupported MacBook Pro

Updating my unsupported 2013 Macbook Pro to macOS Sonoma 14.4 took almost an hour because it requires a reinstall of the whole OS. No USB required though! The update to 14.4 was successful and it’s running smoothly. Watch to see how I did it!

Great job on the video! Your videos helped me update 3 Macs so far!

Good walk-through of the process, thanks. I spent several hours in the past week upgrading an early 2015 MacBook Air and a mid-2015 MacBook Pro to Sonoma. I relied on the OpenCore Legacy Patcher website and their app, plus several YouTube how-to videos and after several attempts along with trial-and-error, got both working very well with Sonoma. My main goal was to extend security updates by a year or so. Pleased and impressed by the OCLP people's dedication!

New subscriber, this was amazing. I didn't run into any issues during the tutorial and everything works perfectly! (2017 MBP Sonoma 14.5)

I updated my mid 2017 MBP and no problem. Patcher notified me about its own upgrade so very cool.

These videos are great Anson. Many thanks. One question. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro with a 128 GB ssd. You said in the video that on installation of the 14.4 update open core seemed to install the whole os. Does it overwrite the previous os or does it keep using more space every time you update? Thanks Anson.

So it's worth noting to anyone who might do this on a Mid 2014 MBP, the 'Keyboard not working' issue on the first login is actually a 'your mac is running insanely slow' issue. I did the PRAM reset, and the first thing i see is a 🚫 Mac startup/support error. If you get this, don't have a heart attack (like i almost did), just switch off and hold Option to select the UEFI boot option you need to select and all is well.

Hi Anson. Is it possible to use your legacy patcher install on a hackintosh? Looks like, if it could, it would make a lot of people happy. Thanks. Lesli

Thanks for your amazing tutorials. I have a question though. I have this 2017 13" MacBook Pro with touch bar. As you might already know, Ventura is the last version supported on that model. This is not my main driver, but it's my "to go" machine when on the go. I have 3 partitions. 1 for Ventura; 1 is the boot camp partition with Windows 11 and finally another partition with macOS Mojave (for legacy software). If I upgrade to Sonoma 10.4 using the Open Core Legacy Patcher, do you think it could mess up my Windows 11 BootCamp and my Mojave partition? I only want to upgrade the Ventura OS to Sonoma. Any help would be helpful!

Great job with the videos. now quick question: Every time i open a pull down menu or something with more options i get numbers identifying every line so if i open the apple logo i get 10 lines with numbers 1-10 next to each line, is it normal . Now second question, i was able to connect to Vision Pro but mouse when seing the screen on the apple vision pro moves very slowly... not fluid at all like if i'm using the screen of the computer . Any feedback or recommendation ? Thanks again

So I did the update and once it booted up it wouldn’t let my keyboard, trackpad or any other vital things such as my Bluetooth or WiFi to work. Now ive had to do a clean install of Ventura on my MacBook as if it’s a new laptop with only a backup saving all my belongings. Can you suggest anything that will allow me to update my MacBook and have it restored with the apps and content I used to have on it?

Just finished the update on MacBookPro2014 and the colours are off. They've lost all vibrancy. Seem very dull. Tried all the options and no improvement. Should I go back to 14.3?

Tried several times updating my late 2015 imac 17, 3 to Sonoma with opencore but nothing would run, system was stuck in a loop, so I reinstalled Monterey than installed Ventura then installed Sonoma and everything worked fine.
