The large black carpenter bee

Black carpenter bees are one of the largest species of bees in the United States, and are often found within the Greater Houston area. They look fairly similar to bumblebees and are often mistaken for them, but black carpenter bees are almost entirely black. They also have a bare and shiny abdomen instead of a fuzzy one. Like bumblebees, carpenter bees help pollinate plants, particularly flowers and vegetables.

Carpenter bees are considered solitary bees, which means they tend to live in small nests without a strict social structure or division of labor. However, this does not mean that they live totally alone. Females often live in small groups, and carpenter bees also tend to like to nest near others. This leads to growing infestations as more generations build nests in the same area.

Just saw one for the first time (South Bulgaria, near the coast). Had to search online to see what it was. Awesome little critter! Doin' work on the flowers, minding its own business :)

I've been watching these carpenter bees around my house quite a bit lately. I thought they were just a big black bumblebee of some kind but they were very unaggressive. Thanks for the video.

I’m scared to DEATH of bees and didn’t even know this one existed……until today when one flew into the California residence I work in!! I was all alone and started crying. That’s how afraid of bees I am and this thing flew in like a small bird sounding like a chainsaw!! I grabbed some house cleaner and sprayed it because it’s all I could find!! It subdued it long enough for me to smash it with my shoe. Omg that thing was massive!!

They're to aggressive to me. I can't even sit in my own back patio peacefully without them trying to attack me. 😡
