Him saying “I do not take my foot off the throttle” is the ABSOLUTE biggest thing that has made me the driver I am today. Cannot tell you how much that sentence helped me when I was learning. I haul water and oil in the oilfields of ND now👍👍👍

Im not a truck driver and just happened on these videos and have watched several about floating gears. This one is by far the best. This guy actually explains everything while he is doing it. Well done sir!

Through driving school all they taught was double clutching so that’s all I did. When I finally got out of school and found me a trucking job my trainer tried to teach me to float even though he himself grinded gears all the time. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to float properly until I watched this video. I figured out that the main thing I was doing wrong was I would let my foot completely off the throttle when shifting. Thanks a lot for making this video and for doing a job explaining it.

I’m 15, my dads been driving since he was 19. He’s 55 now. He’s hauled everything from beer to logs. To 100, 000 pound excavators. In all my time of going with him on the road. He’s drove 9, 10, 15, 18 speed trucks 100 times each probably. And I’ve never one time seen him change gears with the clutch, besides to take off and stop to change into reverse. Great video man. I want to drive trucks when I’m older.

Master trucker in the making right there . I have emense respect to see a father teaching his son stuff like that, even if the boy doesn't want to drive trucks or even get Into a trade . If that little boy sees his dad happy at his job then that kid will most likely find his/hers passion some way down the road .

Overall a very good presentation. Emphasizing not forcing the shifter is key. Over 50 years of helping people learn to drive a manual shift, from dates in high school to a grandaughter and in cars, pickups and big trucks, I have them start using an open palm. It not only shows how little effort it takes to shift, it prevents a "death grip" on the shifter from nervousness and avoids forcing the gears. Well done. Enough talking- let's drive!

First thing my dad taught me was how to clean his truck.

I have to give you a huge thank you!! I am a recent graduate and graduated driving a 10 speed. My first Job which I'm still there only has automatic. It's a seasonal job. So right now I'm in search of a new job. I applied for a job and they only have manual transmissions. I was nervous super nervous cause I wasn't sure if could drive them. Well the day of test I found out I couldn't. I was just struggling missing gears fail attempt at downshifting. I was just doing double clutching the whole time. It was a mess. So obviously I didn't pass. the tester ask me "you don't know how to float gears?" Nope, But heard of it. I was beating myself of my failure. So I decided to go on YouTube to learn this floating gears. I came across your video and man what can I say. I know how to float gears. I applied for a second job. They gave me a drive test and I start the job in 2 weeks. The explanation was so smooth and I caught up quick. I just want to say thank you. You can say you saved my career in trucking.

I’ve been driving a 10- speed EATON for a year in the city of Detroit. Not an easy place to practice floating gears. The traffic is nuts and I find I run though the gears too hard and over rev the engine.
Now after I have seen this video I realize I suck and have been going about it wrong as well. Thank you for some great instruction.

I've got 46 years of driving trucks..been watching YouTube 4 or 5 years and occasionally look at shifting vids, you touched several points most don't realize..like not removing foot from accelerator pedal altogether but rather controlling rpms up or down as needed to match gear speeds before nudging shifter in or out the gear, I explain it as positive/ negative or neutral torque...also finger tips push or pull shifter, if using your upper arm strength you can't properly feel the gears lining up prior to meshing (big difference between rubbing and forcing the mesh)1 guy I trained couldn't figure it out until I made him let go of the stick as he passed thru neutral which made him relax all the pressure that was causing the grinding..really enjoyed your effort to make sense of it all! Good video!

I am a full time driver (43 years) and a part time trainer.  I train my students to double clutch at first, and then I  show them shifting without the clutch, so that when they are more experienced they can try "floating" later.  No need to drop a transmission out on the road.  I teach them exactly the same as you do.  You only need light pressure on the stick for any shift up or down.  If you own your own truck, it is really nice to heat up the stick, and bend it so that it almost touches the seat in low gear. With that arrangement it shifts like a dream.  You've done the best demo I've seen yet.  Can you now show the guys how to shift a 13, 15 and maybe 18 speed?  Great job !

I won’t be surprised when that student (Co-pilot) surpasses his teacher! That kid is on point by watching his old man making every move on that rig. Congratulations, not only you’re a great truck driver, but you seem like a really cool dad. Thanks for the video 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻 cheers!

Clutch or No Clutch, you won't shift an unsynchronized transmission unless you learn "Throttle Control", momentum and rolling resistance.

It's never ending with me learning about floating gears. I attempt it in my five speed coupe for giggles and also because I want to get a CDL, I was never under the impression that you don't let off the throttle when shifting up. I always thought you had to let go. Learn something new everyday.
