Toronto police said Friday during an update on a major auto theft and re-vinning investigation that a former Service Ontario employee was helping the suspects disguise stolen vehicles by providing falsified documents and license plates.
Police allege the Service Ontario employee created new, legitimate vehicle registrations and license plates for stolen vehicles that were used to re-vin the vehicles to make them appear legitimate.
“The stolen vehicles, now with new identities were sold to unsuspecting buyers or used in other criminal activities throughout the city,” explained Det. Dan Grayling of the 53 Division Major Crime Unit.
Police say to evade detection some vehicles were registered to people who had died or did not exist.
Four people have been arrested and 28 charges laid in connection with this scheme, Det. Grayling says. Of the 100 vehicles stolen and re-vinned, police have recovered 21 vehicles worth between $1.5 to $1.8 million.
