this is not at all Butler's theory this is basically what feminist has been saying in decades. (that gender is a social contruct) The more important part of her work is how she interprets gender identity which is much more important, and i haven't got any info on that from this video

Just because you choose to perform a gender script doesn't change the fact that people are either biologically male or female, it simply means that you retain your biologically assigned sex but are now displaying attributes commonly associated with the opposite sex. Sure, you can argue that gender is to a degree socially constructed but that doesn't change that someone is either a man or a woman. Gender is inextricably linked to biological sex and any deviation from this is an aberration. A transposition of gender does not mean gender ceases to exist, because the whole reason that the concepts of male and female have any meaning is because they are self referring and mutually interdependent concepts, just as good has no meaning without reference to an idea of bad. Gender is not arbitrary, it exists because it arises as a direct result of biological differences which over time creates a positive feedback loop which reinforces social gender roles. To say gender ceases to exist and is real only to the extent it is performed is illogical and false because even if you are acting out the opposite gender you are still performing a gender. To assign yourself a gender other than male or female is arbitrary and such a contrived role has no basis in biological sexuality. In short, gender is more biologically determined than socially influenced.

So, what about Trans People, Transgender people are a living proof that Genders are diffrent. A Biological boy is socialised like a boy.. but nevertheless that "boy" feels to be a girl!! How does Gender Theory explain Transgender??

Where did this information come from? Has Judith Butler got a specific book about this particular theory?

a big question remains: why are these assumptions made? why does society differentiate between the expectations it defines for men and the expectations it defines for women?

That's great. Now where's the evidence? Where's the empirical data that bears this out? Fortunately nobody would ever dream of basing any public or educational policy decisions on this theory without it. Lol

Is Judith Butler trying to tell me what I can and cannot teach my children. If sex and orientation isn't natural and shouldnt be taught what else is on that list?

this video offends alot people, apparently. Lots of strawmen in the comments. Funny thing, how people argue with straw because the original source isn't as evil as they think it is.

Alright yes, gender and gender roles are socially constructed in a sense. However this "construction" far predates society as a whole and probably began before the advent of the Neolithic era or whenever homo sapiens became distinct from hair covered primates, when human survival was dependent on the optimization of resources, (i.e. the strongest people did the most physically demanding work such as hunting and building) so the allotment of menial (homemaking) work actually made sense to be given to women in this context. humanity has obviously evolved past hunter/gatherer and basic agriculture so there really is no reason for these norms to persist but to say that gender roles "aren't natural" and to shame people who chose to fall into them is equally ridiculous. If a facet of a species has persisted for tens of thousands of years and becomes the norm people instinctively fall into from birth then it is natural. (depending on how you define natural obviously we don't see similar gender role systems to humans existing in lions or anacondas or whatever because they actually aren't humans and follow different sets of biological rules) I don't care what you want to do with your life but acting like women only act "feminine" because of modern beauty magazines or attitudes in the Victorian period or whatever arbitrary facet of history you want to base your argument on is just as ignorant and uninformed and the people who try to make that point are arguably just as stupid as people who say women and men HAVE to be a certain way you were not socialized to be the gender you are because of anything in recent history or by society. society may propagate these norms to a sometimes harmful effect, but society did not create them because they've existed longer than society itself.

so if gender "breaks" would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

I'm Hank Green, and I have to say that this video really sparked my interest. So I decided to write my own theory of gender - see hankgreen.com for more details. Thanks!
