Regular Car Reviews: 2000 Toyota Celica GTS

This is the 7th generation, so it runs on the T230 platform with the Front-engine, Front-wheel-drive layout, using an engine similar to the one that powered the MR2 Spyder, which adds a certain poetry, since this ended up dying the same year as the MR2: In July 2004, poor sales forced Toyota to announce that the Celica and the MR2 would be discontinued in North America at the end of the 2005 model year. Of course, I'm not entirely sure its death is necessarily the fault of the car itself, so much as the economy surrounding it.

"If you ask the GTS to bang like a Lotus, it'll nut too soon and will call you mommy by accident"

Grade A comedy.

The hood scoop actually does have a purpose! It leads to the back near the firewall, where the exhaust manifold sits, and cools that area down. Pretty neat huh? I thought it was just for looks, but it is functional design!

Lotus Elise is the younger hot sister while the Celica is older sister with character. It is clear which everyone wants, but what do you want?

I knew a guy that tried really hard and loved this car. He bought one as soon as it came out and was so proud of it. The next month after purchasing this car, he got a crazy girl prego, some where in the following 9 months he traded his GTS for a dodge caravan. The End

This man needs toreview the Aztek. That should automatically shoot their value up by $5K. To roughly $5k.

The 2zz engine in the lotus, celica, vibe, corolla are all the same YAMAHA. The only difference is ecu tuning and intake manifold and fuel rail setups for the supercharged lotus. Lotus may have upgraded the oil pump gearing and camshafts as these are known components to negate midrange performance or durability.

The reaction to the automatic transmission is exactly the reaction I have when I spy an automatic in pretty much any sports car.

From what I know, the Celica 2ZZ and the Elise 2ZZ are identical, at least internally. Same head, same block. The difference in power comes from a different ECU and different tune. Toyota and Yamaha have a historical relationship spanning a few engines, like the 4A-GE 20 valve. The Celica 2ZZ has that Yamaha designed head.

Also, I'm surprised you didn't make a VTEC joke! The 2ZZ has variable valve timing and lift, only Toyota engine to get it!

I have an 03 gt 5 speed as a doordash mobile and love it so much. It’s the epitome of “slow car fast” and sips gas like a boss. It’s still legitimately fun to drive after driving it non stop as a job for 3+ years. Reliable as fuck, too.

Girls love it, too.

how did Toyota go from this to being the most boring, vapid car company in the world?

The High-School Crush metaphor is really spot on since this was my dream car when I was like 14.

I've had 8 celica and the rear wheel ones are great. the 6 speed gts is an amazingly underrated sports car, and the 6th gen gt was honestly one of the best cars I've ever owmed

I got one of these a month ago! front struts were bouncing all over the place, it has the SAME BUMPER, and the CV axle was non existent but I love this car a LOT. it DOES still want to have fun even with the engine too lean. Its design is AMAZING and I really appreciate it. im not letting this car go until I can't afford to fix it.
