Hello everyone, in today's video we will be discussing the September 2022 tragedy of missing hiker Kathleen Patterson. Kathleen was only 60 years old the day she went missing. she left her house at roughly 7:30am to head to the Spur Cross Trailhead. She had planned a 5.2 mile hike, however, she never made it home.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her husband Steve, her entire family, all her friends and to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, AZARTACH, the various non profits and all the volunteers who pulled together to help bring Kathleen home🙏🙏

Thank you for watching and wishing you all a very happy New Year 🙏🎆✨️

Phillip Wilson was reported missing the following day from the First Water Trailhead in Apache Junction and is still missing. His case did not receive any media attention, but a small group of us are still searching for him. Thank you for your help in raising awareness on these cases.

Heat Exhaustion/Stroke can hit very suddenly seemingly out of the blue. One moment one can feel a certain degree of stress, but one can think that it should not be a big deal, and then it can hit and one is on the ground passed out.

This happened to me in 03 during Operation Iraqi Freedom One. We were still in Kuwait, Saddam had not yet fallen. I was in the desert doing some work, feeling hot and stressed, but sure that I could go on when the next thing I know I am in a medical tent with an IV hooked up to me which saved my life. I was told that I dropped like a stone, was completely unresponsive and had to be run/carried to the medical tent. I survived only because fellow Soldiers, we always worked in teams, were near me, saw me fall and rushed me to the medical tent.

So, she could have known that she was close, confident that even though she felt heat stress that she would make and then just dropped to the ground completely unresponsive and died.

Our property is adjacent to this park. This is an incredible community, the support, outpouring and dozens of volunteers who spent days searching was completely incredible.

In short, she went in the wrong direction which made her hike considerably longer than planned. She eventually made it back but succumbed to the conditions close to the where she started.

The community, volunteers, park officials, law enforcement, and other experts are all working together to increase education and provide tools to help in these situations

I live in the area. On the Nextdoor app, someone said the following: "word from close family friend is that they believe she fell and hit her head and never got back up".

I'm very fond of the Cave Creek trails and sorry that another person has lost their life to the desert. To help anyone that would like to hike the desert please do so in the Winter months. It's still very hot in September, also there are many mine shafts and crevices in this area that people fall into and may never be found. To give you an idea of how hot, 5 am the heat is already unbearable and will last until 10 pm to 11 pm this is during the mid summer. Summer heat starts as early as March and ends around the first of October. Please be careful.

Something I am gleaning from your Mysteries, Bryan, is that I will not ever go hiking alone. Ever.

Thanks for presenting this case, it sounds very strange. Having seen numerous missing people cases, it's odd that many of them, like her, are experienced hikers. This is not a judgement but none of them has had personal locator beacons, and I understand that they're expensive. Sounds like this woman had everything she needed but it's very suspicious that she perished so close to water sources. Thank you to every single volunteer hiker, paraglider, horseback rider for aiding in the search in that heat. Hope her husband finds out what happened.

I used to hike this area a lot, some of the trails further back in the area are very difficult to follow, the heat can be deadly. So sad that she went missing.

I love that Brian is so engaged with his audience and the practices of safe wilderness adventure.

Would be interested in a coin but I'm in Australia so instead just commenting to send some love to one of the most underrated hiking and SAR channels on YouTube

No matter how confident and competent of a hiker you are, please buy a locator beacon for a hundred bucks. It such a cheap device that can save your life if you get lost.

Hi. I just watched your video and I want to throw my name in the running for the silver coins! I am 68 years old and just in the last few years have discovered the joy of hiking! Of course my husband and I are now retired and enjoy traveling to places with great hiking! Your cautionary videos are actually very informative and teaching aids to always be prepared! Thanks!

Oh my. My husband and I hiked this trail many years ago when we visited the area. It would be easy to get off trail, if one wasn't paying attention. So sad.

I lived on Black Mountain in Cave Creek for 9 years - behind our house about 75 yards was a cross erected (on Brenner's Hill behind Buffalo Chip Saloon). I found out a 64 man died from heat exhaustion on that spot - It was so close to houses, businesses, etc. It was just so perplexing that so close, he didn't make it. I've experience heat exhaustion and it comes on so fast! Thank God my brother who is an EMT knew what to do. My heart was racing, it was so sudden! I will never hike alone (after that, it was only 94 out and I drank soooo much water too!) especially in places like Spur Cross where it's more remote and cell service is not good. My prayers to her family - it is just tragic :(
