I was the engineer on production team back in the summer of 2018 at Tesla Fremont factory. This was when we had to deliver 5000 cars a week. I was on the night shift. It was 2am at night, and the whole production line had shut down because the welding robot had some issue. The factory was new and lighting was limited, it was kinda dark and I was trying to figure out how to get it started. As I was pondering in the dark, I turned back, only to see a tall figure staring back at me. He said 'hi, what seems to be the problem?'. I said 'Elon! 😲', and gave him the details of the problem.

We eventually called the robot technician who came running from his home in pajamas to get the robot sorted and restart the assembly line. That was my first encounter with Elon.

For everyone confused in the comments: They had a part in the car. The machine producing it broke, stopping production. Elon stared at it, wondering what that part even does. Production doesn't second guess the designers, it's not their job. Turns out the crash safety team had evolved the design making the part obsolete, but it hadn't been communicated yet.

Example of lack of communication can cause a problem in a company

I used to work in a military grocery store (commissary) and there was a big display of various items on sale. There was a big sign hanging from the ceiling that said, Up to 50% off. I happened to be passing by when a customer was complaining. A cashier and the store director were there. The guy was pointing at the sign and the store director was telling the cashier, yes we have to give it to him for half price. The item was 20% off. I knew right away what the problem was. I said, the sign doesn’t say 50% off, it says up to 50% off. Something could be 5 or 10% off and still be OK.
