The trapezius muscle is a flat, triangular muscle and belongs to the superficial back muscles. It plays an important role in the shoulder and head movements and is innervated by the accessory nerve (CN XI). The muscle has a descending (superior), transverse (middle) and ascending (inferior) part with different origins and insertions that allow different types of movements.

The aim of this video is to teach you the most important anatomy facts about the trapezius muscle including its function, origin, insertion and innervation.

In this video tutorial, we cover the following aspects of the trapezius muscle:
0:15 nerve supply by the accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI)
0:28 origins and insertions of the muscle's 3 parts: descending, transverse and ascending part
1:03 functions of the trapezius in the shoulder: shoulder stabilization, elevation and depression
1:22 functions of the trapezius muscle in the vertebral column: lateral and dorsal flexion of the head

These videos are so helpful in studying for my personal training certificate with NASM. They provide a "moving visual" alternative to the texts in my textbook. THANK YOU!

I wish if you show the movements in your videos, this will make the functions much clearer for us. great video though

So if we strengthen trap muscle from laterally (from the sides), we can cure scapular winging ?

I see all these comments about showing the muscle movement. Move your trapezius! He's just showing you the anatomy and the terms they use geez

It could be much better if you add its origin and insertion!!

Without showing movement this is almost meaningless if you don’t know the vocabulary that is so casually tossed around.

bones and muscles are dependent on eachother for various actions

It would be great if you would show movements of the limbs to support what you are saying. Your terminology is very medical and If I could understand what you were saying I wouldnt really need to be watching your video. Seriously !!, make things simpler so that 90% of the population can understand you instead of 5%.
