Wtf is for competition. Itf is for defense. That's the difference. One is just for show. That's the issue people end up with thinking taekwondo is no good for self defense in a street fight, because most places teach wtf. Don't hurt your opponet, just make contact. Itf on the other hand, wants you to beat him to sleep.

ITF is real TKD, traditional TKD, unfortunately it still doesnt get as much support from South Korea as its a martial art that was created when Korea was WHOLE (North&South Korea), they really dont want to relate to North Koreans i guess, but North Koreans LOVE ITF TKD and laugh their arses at WTF TKD (South Korean). Instead they care only about WTF TKD, which is a South Korean version of TKD made for Olympics.... Its a shame when people think "Taekwondo" they think WTF TKD as its far more popular.... ITF TKD is far more badass, a true martial art for self defense, its more similar to Kickboxing when compared to "WTF TKD".

ITF schools are very scarce in the US. With most WT schools in the US, you have to combine it with Boxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu-Jitsu or Judo. ITF is a little more well rounded. Old-school WTF was legit though, because they had to complete with early ITF.

The main difference between ITF and WTF is that ITF:s main purpose whit training is self defense rather than a competetive sport meanwhile WTF is the exact opposite i would say it depends on what your goal is whit your training is it to learn how to deal in acutal combat situations or for the fancy gold medal no offense to any of the organisations but just to make it clear you have to understand this difference before starting a debate about it its otherwise just like comparing kung fu whit thaiboxing

To comments: The ART has knees, elbows, spinning hammerfists/backnuckle in Poomsae/Palgwe (1970's Poomsae) but is very, very mostly not drilled on pads etc in favour of the art choosing to specialise in kicking. Me: around 15yrs exp (9yrs WTF/6 ITF).

Many arts are doing the same, e.g. Judo much less Newaza (ground game) since 80's and even boxing hundreds of years ago had light grappling - yes I was shocked to learn that history, recently as well. Many purists aschew Muay Thai in favour of Muay Bouran too.

Itf is the art (combat based) form of tkd you can tell the difference from the strict techniques like chambering kicks that emphasis power and wtf is the sport of tkd witch often technique is thrown out ex) it is more about kicking as fast as possible rather then having a devastating effect.

I would learn both, ITF focuses on power and strength while WTF focuses on speed and pin poin accuracy. If you take those elements and combine them into your own form of taekwondo, you can become extremely strong
