I seen this a lot with junior NCO’s, especially in the early 2000’s. They have a good PT, rifle score, time grade and service, let’s make them an E-5. I protested dozens of promotions, just to fill slots. I had a handful of E-3’s that could have made better leaders. Some of these “NCO’s” couldn’t lead a patrol in classroom on PowerPoint. We lost a bunch of potential leaders to convenience of promotion. In ‘O5 I had an old soldier that was a true leader as an E-4 and was about to get out and I talked him into coming to (Special Forces) selection. This 22 year old kid excelled at every stage until he went to 7th Group. He is about to pick up Sergeant Major.

In my unit with the Marines. It was the person who yelled the loudest, incompetent, and abusive that got promoted.
I was supposed to pick up CPL during my first deployment. But having selfish narcissistic assholes leadership not wanting for anyone to pick up.
It took 3 years just to pick up CPL but my Jr Marines started to pick up a month or 2 after me.
Leadership would demoralized, abuse of power, and lie. All my deployments to Afghanistan. We always had our battalion commander get removed but the problem was with company/platoon commanders, SNCO, and NCO that would haze, manipulate, demoralized, abuse, and hurt your chances to lead.
3 years of being a senior lance corporal who was doing the same work as CPLs and Sgts.
I had leaders tried to get me promoted by other means. I just felt discriminated and picked on because the way they wanted me to be wasn't aligned with my values and morals. I didn't like yelling, talking down to my Marines, and kiss ass.

Understanding people and their strengths and weaknesses also helps. Look out for the quiet ones, the ones in the back of the room also, they can be very valuable.

Does no one also realize he is talking about business here, as his company currently is about training business leaders? He didn't put our government in charge, he's retired from the military, and I've never heard anyone say he himself was a reckless or awful leader in the SEALS anyway. People join the military for different reasons, and probably learn a lot after they do, good or bad. You don't even have to agree with the military but can we stop acting like this guy walked up to your door and personally affended you somehow?
