If I didn’t make it clear enough i’ll say it here. if you commit a crime, there is no being redeemed as a creator or celebrity. This video is in reference to people that are in murky waters and there are no real rules set in place. i’m not defending anyone who has committed any real crimes LMAO

It’s strange how some people are more upset about cancel culture than what that person actually said or did

I feel like it depends on the situation, creeps like James, Shame, Colleen don’t deserve second chances and should be removed. They’re clearly predators among other awful things they’ve done. I honestly don’t understand how 2 out of those 3 aren’t in jail

James Charles is like a cockroach that just won't die and keeps coming back.

Depends on what youre cancelled for. If its an off colour joke told 10-15 years in the past and youre sorry for it sure. If youre shane dawson and have committed numerous crimes of course not.

Calling feedback "cancellation" is simply to trivialise the fact that someone has (9/10 times) committed a crime.

People who take their feedback and change after apologising almost NEVER call it 'being cancelled'; they call it "I did a bad thing, and I want to apologise".

Meanwhile, people who commit serious crimes call it "getting cancelled" to make it smaller. To make it a joke. Cancellation is for tv shows, after all! Not for people! It's not a word with serious connotations, and it never has been.
If someone says "I'm being cancelled for xyz" in a serious voice, run away. They are NOT a good person. People who say "I've done something wrong, and I want to apologise" (whether they've been pushed to apologise or not) are far more likely to be accepting of their mistake. They're far more likely to change.

Only bad people actually call their own faults "getting cancelled" as far as I've seen.

god can you imagine Shane Dawson having to endure an 8 hour shift at Starbucks. Only sitting on breaks, not allowed on his phone, people barely look twice at him (because batistas are just supposed to be atms where money and rudeness go in and coffee comes out) like I think he would evaporate into the ether

its 100% an accountability thing. these people arent being cancelled, they complain about being cancelled to victimize themselves. "wah. theyre trying to run me off the internet" is the only thing they can accept because in what universe is sorry in their vocabulary. they just dont like the fact that there are consequences to their shitty actions, a lot of these people think they should be untouchable.

a reminder that shane recently said “i didnt actually do anything wrong” in his interview with steve o. his is not sorry. and he is crusty

10:08 I think it's actually harmful to call Matt Rife's comedy style "dark humour" because that's not what it is. I think the majority of his audience would probably enjoy dark humour. He is simply ranting angrily about how much he hates women.

What constitutes as proof of change? How can we tell that someone is doing something different because it's the right thing, or just to save their own skin? Honestly, this is a tough subject!! I like to think anyone can change, and change for the good, but also I don't think people with long negative streaks should have a platform, but who's to say when something is really unredeemable? I guess we as viewers have to make those decisions wisely on whose content we are going to support.

Thank you for making the connection between prison and cancel culture. I've always thought about that

love everything about this video. casually mentioning that you're a prison abolitionist is a mood. also, cool hat.

Most of the canceled creators either have never worked a real job or haven’t worked one since they were very young and are detached from reality because of their era of internet fame. Putting them in real line of work to make a living & worrying about where their next meal is coming from or if they could make rent this month would be more entertaining to me.

I’m so tired of people saying messed up crap and being like “Oh don’t cancel me!” Like…

Maybe I’m wrong but this feels like a response to Kuncan Dastner’s video on Dean. I felt Duncan was a little unforgiving and reductive, though I usually love his angle on things. Great video nonetheless, I think you added important ~nuance~ to the conversation.
