My first vehicle was a 1966 Ford Mustang, which my Dad paid for half (bought the car in 1986 for $2, 800.00). I "grew up with Ford", because my Uncle worked for Ford Motor Company, and my Dad could get A-Plan pricing. My 2nd vehicle was a 1992 F-150, with an inline 6 cylinder, and a 5-speed manual (which I bought new, after my Dad died, and I had the $$$ to buy it new). My 3rd vehicle is my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. I bought the Dodge because it has the solid Dana-44 front axle. I owned a Chevy Malibu, a Ford Escort. I bought a 1998 Jeep Wrangler for my wife to drive, after the Malibu started running funny. Anyway, . I got off on a tangent...

In Missouri (and other states I'm sure), if you buy a new truck (or used), and you can't "pay cash" for it, you have to have a loan, and must carry Full Coverage Insurance, which can be $600.00/month for a newly licensed driver. So, let's say you have a loan, and your payment is $300.00/month, and your Full Coverage Insurance is $500.00/month. That's $800.00/month, HARD CASH, gone. If you have a decent job, making $12.00/hr, that's $480.00/week (gross), which is about $370.00/week (clear). Now, if you have Rent... say $500.00/month... that brings it to $1, 300.00/month. This does not include Utilities, or Food. Your Monthly Net income is about $1, 480.00. So, if your Insurance, Loan Payment, and Rent are $1, 300.00/month, you have $180.00/month to pay Electric, Gas (if apartment is equipped), and Water (unless the Apartment Complex pays it). So, if your Electric Bill is $100.00/month, that leaves $80.00/month to buy food. I can assure you, I can eat WAY MORE than $80.00 of groceries per month.

New vehicles are not for "newly licensed drivers", unless they do have help from Mom or Dad. I know some parents give their kids a new car when they graduate High School.

Anyway, if you've read this far... Thanks! I apologize if I "took over" (it was not my intention), I saw a "Math Problem", and had to work it...

Great video! Good KEY POINTS!

I completely destroyed my first car within five weeks, I was 16 at the time so no need to explain. So take his advice and don't put all your eggs in one basket .

just bought my first full size truck, 2012 gmc Sierra wt, 17, 000 bucks, 70, 000 miles. and it's a 4x4. it came with a hundred thousand mile warranty on the powertrain, and gap insurance, i have been driving old beaters until I could finally get what I wanted, I built credit on my own, and financed the truck on my own, I'm 22, my advice to you if you are just in high school are just graduating, find a long term job and establish credit as soon as you can, also keep a good driving record, the price of insurance on a newer vehicle for a younger male can make or break your budget. and if you are just 18, wait, I know it sucks I've been there, but after you work a few years and see how reality is when you finally get what you've been wanting it feels that much better, and you have a lot more respect for your purchase because you've learned the value of a dollar. hope this advice helps.

So much good advise. I'm 17 and I'm working 7 days a week and working around 50 hours a week so I'm bringing in some big checks for my age even being that I really don't make a lot more than minimum wage. It is so tempting to try to save up a couple of summers worth of work and blow all of the money I've got on a diesel truck but in all reality the 2001 f150 with 120, 000 on it will do me just fine until I get done with college and move into a real career.

Grew up in my first truck, 92 F150. Nearing 430k miles and getting ready for a complete suspension overhaul. Friends in high school spent their money on sound systems while I was still rockin the stock tape deck till senior year, my money was going to parts and sensors.

Excellent advice as always. When I was looking for my first truck, I really really wanted a Toyota but ended up picking out an almost 30 year old Jeep with just the base straight 6. It served me fine and was a great daily vehicle that barely cost anything to keep it running. I don't think I spent more than $5000 on it the entire time I owned it, including the initial cost. To this day, I still drive the older Jeeps, I know how to work on them and its rather easy to find parts for without breaking the bank.

My first truck was a 4x4 Dodge Dakota . My second truck is currently my Ford F150. Both good Trucks and I agree with you on this topic.

My first truck was a really low miles Ford ranger. It was a great truck and it was lifted that was a bonus. I would always go with a mini truck 4x4. I used that truck to tow dual hay wagons it dose good. If you find a truck worth buying and you can pay cash do it!

Any car payment sucks. The fun of a new vehicle wears off sooner than that payment does.

All vehicles drop in value, so get one that's dropped to a reasonable range for your budget! Great advice.

I have a 96 F-150 my dad purchased it new, the last one they had on the show room floor. This was when the 97 year model trucks were coming out. My Dad drove the truck about a month, then I got a call from my wife, she was coming back to Texas from California. The car she was driving broke down, so I drove to California to bring her back home using my Dads new truck. That was a five thousand mile round trip, what a brake in for a new truck. Now after all that time my 96 F-150 has well over two hundred thousand miles on it, and it's still going strong. Theirs nothing like a good truck, regardless of what brand it is. Thanks. :-)

Excellent video topic. I grew up in a brand loyal family and was not afraid to branch out. I just purchased my first car, I was looking for an extended cab short bed diesel truck, and wound up with a Honda Accord. 😂 A little different, but I'm happy because I'm getting 33 mpg and it gets me from point A to point B

Good advice for a lot of folks, not just young people.

Great advice. At 16 I got a 10 year old truck 3500 cash. Loved it and Put 50000 miles on. So I would say it was worth it.

Great advice, you gotta work your way up. I went from a 2003 Nissan Maxima ($4, 000) at 16 years old to a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee ($7, 000) at 18 to a 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 ($25, 000) at 21. All 3 were/are excellent vehicles and served their purpose. My next truck will be a duramax 3500.
