For those wondering how he got free

After being arrested in France, Sagawa confessed to his crimes and was sent to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. He spent approximately two years in the hospital, during which time a doctor diagnosed him with a condition called "dementia praecox" due to a misinterpretation of a past illness. However, there are also claims that his wealthy father hired an expensive lawyer, which might have contributed to his release. As a result of the diagnosis and possibly his father's legal efforts, Sagawa was deemed unfit for trial and received a non-prosecution decision.

The French court ruled that Sagawa was not suitable for punishment due to his mental state and declared him not guilty. Instead of being sent to prison, he was placed in the Henri Colin psychiatric hospital indefinitely.

In 1984, Sagawa was deported from France to Japan, where he was admitted to the Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital. Unlike in France, he was diagnosed as being sane in Japan. Japanese police intended to put him on trial, but the French authorities refused to hand over the necessary investigative documents, stating that they could not provide information on someone who had received a non-prosecution decision. As a result, Sagawa was not punished in Japan and was released in 1986 without any official record of his crimes.

It was probably the most disturbing thing I had ever come across at that age, opened my eyes to how dark some people are in this world.
