Most people tend to see Erwin as this great leader with lots of guts who knows how to achieve the impossible. But the real beauty of his character lies not in his charisma as a character but due to how human he is. Underneath the image of the great Commander of the Survey corps is nothing but a simple human being, selfish and flawed. Ever since his father died, his sole purpose in life was to find out the secrets of the world Erwin was in. For that simple goal, he was willing to sacrifice countless lives without any hesitation. Using his natural charisma and leadership qualities, Erwin manages to misguide his comrades into thinking they were devoting their hearts and everything to something great for the entire human race when it reality they were simply being used as tools for one man's desire.

But near the end of the operation to retake Wall Maria, Erwin is left with the choice of either abandoning his comrades to uncover the secrets in the basement that always wanted or attempt a last ditch effort to distract the Beast Titan in a suicidal attempt to give Levy the chance to take it out. This moment is what defined Erwin as a character. He sacrificed his lifelong goal just so all the people that died following him would finally have meaning in their struggle. In that moment, Erwin for the first and last time finally became the man he always pretended to be.

People stupidly compare Eren to Lelouch because of their self scapegoat plan but in reality it is Erwin who is more similar to Lelouch in terms of character. Zero at first was nothing more than a false image created by Lelouch to use the Japanese rebels as his pawns to utilize in to exact his vengeance on his father. But in the end of Code Geass, Lelouch truly becomes what the image of Zero had embodied through his actions.
