Grand piano vs upright piano. Can you hear the difference between them? I played in a concert grand piano and in an upright. Hope you hear the difference!

Can we take a moment to talk about this mans dedication to the joke by getting a painting of himself staring into your soul while playing the piano

There is a big difference. The upright has more of a closed in boxy and tinny sound compared to the grand which has a louder, richer and warmer, sound. I have always liked the sound of both pianos but there is a certian sound from an old upright piano which I have always liked. I have never got to play a piano with that sound yet, maybe one day I will.

It’s very interesting to hear the different qualities of each instrument. The primary tell for me was how the upright had a more concealed and boxy sound compared to the full and large sound of the grand. Especially on the higher and lower parts of the instrument, you can really tell the difference with the fullness of sound.

I wish I would get the pleasure of playing either one, both sound beautiful. You sir, are a legend.

Love the full range sound and looks of a grand but there's something charming and nostalgia of an old full upright piano sitting up against the wall of a home

Orgulho do país! Para mais músicos clássicos nesse país!

I find I like old upright pianos for contrapuntal music - there's actually a service to the often more complex (but less refined) timbre of the notes in separating voices and making them sound unique. That being said, Chopin Waltzes, Rachmaninoff, or anything using chord extensions longs for the pristine tone of a grand.

those are some beautiful pianos!! I've never seen a natural wood grand piano, it's almost always been black or white, but, that one looks absolutely wonderful.
And, I'm glad you did this comparison, cause, I remember my music teacher back in elementary school had an upright piano, and I'd been wondering if there really was a difference. There is, but, not so much that it detracts from the music, as they both sound wonderful. Though, I do prefer the grand piano myself, the upright is still a wonderful one.

A diferença mais evidente é á intensidade do som o volume, além disso o piano de cauda tem uma clareza nas notas ao passo que o piano de armário é mais abafado ele dá a sensação de estar mais distante.

I really love that happy and charming tone of the upright. Eventhough there are loads of pianos like that and it's absolutely nothing special, I'd still spend my life funds for a piano with a sound like this. I don't care about the tuning, it sounds amazing to me!!

The grand piano has a better frequency response: more bass and treble in the sound; the upright piano sound has too much midrange.

Yes. The upright sounds more subdued and tinny. But with your playing, both sound really good. However I just discovered that I prefer the sound of a grand piano.

The difference is rather easy to hear, but honestly, I could listen to you play either, it's lovely either way.

The strings are longer in the grand and the soundboards are probably vastly different as well, plus having the lid that opens to the side gives the grand more projection to the camera/microphone, the upright has the lid on top so the main part of the sound is going straight up.

O piano de cauda tem o som mais poderoso, mas o outro também tem sua beleza. Na primeira música do vídeo, por exemplo, eu gostei mais no piano menor. Passaria horas ouvindo você tocar, Vinheteiro.

Big difference. Upright has a tinny sound but still enjoyable.

I love this guy's videos. Re the difference -- of course it's obvious, but miking, equalizing, and acoustics of the room based on the positioning of the two pianos could contribute to the difference. The inherent difference is understandable, but we have no way of knowing if what we hear on the video represents only that.

I'd be curious to compare the upright moved away from the wall to the grand. I know it isn't necessarily the way an upright is intended to be used, but it would be interesting to hear just how much of the upright's sound is lost to the wall.

Amazing playing on both instruments! Making the only real lesson here; whether you own an upright or a grand, keep it tuned!

That big piano sounds soooo beautiful... the big chords sound so full and powerful, love it...
