I'm a clinical nursing professor with a community college. The former director of the program told me upon hire that I had to send students home who were late, and that included a minute or after! We live in an area where snowstorms are common, and pop-up storms happen pretty frequently. We had a storm one particular morning, and 2 students called me, frantic, that they had hit accidents and were running late. I reassured them that I'm no monster and, in fact, an avowed pragmatist who takes reasonable excuses. I looked at the school's ACTUAL policy, and in fact, it states if inclement weather impedes the start of clinical, then the professor can extend clinical at the end for students' safety. Reading is a valuable skill.

Teachers can be late but students can’t, unbelievable.

Recently retired Canadian high-school teacher chiming in here… I have marked students Absent in the computer attendance, when they have shown up 5-10 minutes before the end of of a 75 minute class with no valid excuse (councillor’s note or similar) and a rude attitude. The time that they walked in, however, was noted in the physical record that I kept. Regarding marking a student Absent when they are only late, is an issue. Given that there are school emergencies where evacuation of the school is necessary, marking someone absent AND they don’t appear outside at the muster point, means that no one looks for them! Given that there has been a rise in school shootings, WITH fatalities…marking a student absent AND the teacher does not make it out alive (or with wits intact), may mean that the student’s body may not be searched for or identification may not be made in a timely manner. It is necessary to account for all students entrusted to a teacher’s care. AND that also means that TOCs (Teachers on Call)/substitutes need to do this since you are the replacing teacher for those assigned classes/days. (I had one that didn’t. I was not impressed. Apparently he couldn’t read the typed instructions for the day either.)

One of my friends was always about 10 minutes late for school and our first class was English(we had a very strict teacher) so he took attendance 5 minutes in and submitted it there, my friend was rarely ever there for attendance. On his report card for the trimester he had 58 absences in english 😂😂😂

In my school a teacher can also mark someone late instead of straight up marking them absent. Delays longer than 10/15 minutes need justification. So if someone's like 5 minutes late he'll be marked as late instead of absent

My little sister’s middle school recently implemented a policy that you have to pay upwards of 5-50 cents for a piece of paper, and if you do not buy the paper then the assignment will be marked as a permanent 0 and you will be rewarded a detention for insubordination. Is this even legal?

My bus was regularly late but I almost never missed a day. I think I had something like 16 days absent on my report card in one semester.

In our school is when you are less than 5 minutes late. But then... you know. BUT IF TEACHERS ARE 20 MIN. LATE, NOTHING HAPPENDS. IF THEY EVEN APPEAR

For Safeguarding you can't mark the student absent if they arrive late, you have to mark them late.
If they are marked absent yet they were in your class, and then their is an evacuation emergency, if that student is missing at role call in the assembly point, there may be no way to know they are I trouble somewhere and need help.

In the UK there are two legal registers - am (when school starts say 9am) and pm, (usually between 12 and 1pm - which in our school is before the lunch break) and then there are class registers.
But it is the legal registers that are used for fire drills.
If students arrive late (after first bell) they have to sign in at the office.

The teachers that mark you absent for coming after the bell are the same ones who tell you "the bell does not dismiss you"
