An Irish soldier died in Ukraine just recently, he had been wounded, lost an eye in 2022 but returned to the front line. Robert Deegan.

As usual, the title and intro has precious little to do with the content of the video. "Otto"'s story is summarized in less than 10 seconds.

As an old soldier I can verify that being a soldier is a rough trade.

Thank you to Western governments and people, who supported us with military equipment, and who fought beside us, we will never forget it

Ukraine is going to come away from this with one of the best trained military. They are getting some great tactical/logistical help from the best we can offer. Then they are now cross trained to operate equipment from five different NATO countries. They have even developed their own brand of low cost/effective drone warfare that the US is definitely paying attention to.

I harbour a great amount of respect for those soldiers who volunteered from other countries. Based on what Ukraine is ultimately fighting for, there really should be more volunteers than there are. It's truly unfortunate. If I were in better health, I would seriously consider joining. Unfortunately, if I tried, I would never pass the physical.

The first thing lost in every war is always the truth.

1 Million casualties. It's crazy how every single person that died, had family and friends that hoped for them to come back. Just for them to be mentioned on a random Military channel for 4 seconds like they don't even matter.

I can empathize with Otto because I already had a pneumothorax after a serial rib fracture because a fracture edge pierced the lung.

It should be remembered that when Germany invaded the Soviet Union they were hailed as liberators from the Soviet Russian occupation after WWI. But shortly after the Ukrainians changed their opinion, since Germany simply was a new occupier.

In Estonia we had a similar experience: after one year of Soviet occupation Estonians hailed the German expansion as a liberation, but shortly after Estonians also changed their opinion. From then on it became the goal of Estonians to get weapons so that we could fight against both occupiers. On September 22th 1944 (yes, it is exactly 80 years ago in 2024) Otto Tief formed a new Independent Estonian government and urged ALL men to fight for the countries liberation even if it meant joining the SS as the first step; it was a needed sacrifice to get the weapons and ammunition (some people do not understand this calculation). This was based on the Atlantic Declaration of August 11th 1941 where US and UK had promised to support independence of all occupied European countries. But Estonia was let down by Churchill, Roosevelt and Truman. So were our brothers in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

It is definitely one of the best things for Ukraine to have the foreign legion. The biggest asset they bring is experience. A lot of the foreign Legionnaires bring combat experience at a time where combat experience in any military has become rare. They also bring in western tactics and are showing the importance of an NCO corps.

(Its not a joke, he died a few weeks/months ago after he survived the lung shot and went back to the front)

An irish citizen died fighting in ukraine, while there’s thousands of Ukrainian military aged men living it up in Ireland, who should be fighting for their country

In Germany you can also lose your citizenship if you do voluntary service in a foreign military (in fact this is one of only two ways to involuntarily lose German citizenship), just like in Austria, however only if you already have another citizenship or if you gain a new citizenship through the volunteer service (ie. you can't become stateless this way). Actually applying the law is discretionary though, so German authorities can just choose to let them keep their citizenship.

It's like that episode of Futurama with Zap Brannigan explaining how he defeated the killbots.

War isn't alot of fun. Like you volunteer the country you wanted to fought and defend. It's about survival and staying alive.

I hope Ukraine will be able to sort out the issues they've been having with finding enough recruits. I think it's really unfair that some guys are defending the country from the Russian invaders while those Ukrainian men who fled the country or paid a bribe to get out of military service are living in safety and comfort. Since the start of the full scale invasion in February of 2022 it's been against the law for males over 18 to leave the country. The guys who didn't leave or try to weasel out military service when they were called up have been fighting hard all this time are tired, they miss their families, and really need a break. They've fought honorably and have done their patriotic duty. If not for those who, despite being called up, have spent the war cowardly dodging the military recruiters, there would be enough troops to rotate units more often, giving the soldiers much neeed time to rest and refit in some of the quieter sectors.
