A little trick I use to learn a new track quickly is to follow someone with a custom painted helmet or suit. Odds are that they are quick and likely know their way around the track as well. Of course this doesn't always work. In this case, the other driver had a bad engine and could barely accelerate out of the corners. This was a weighted event, so this has to be down to engine grunt.

Generally that hand signal is not to indicate that the corner is yours, that will be perceived as 'I'm letting you go'
