The MG 42 is the best machine gun of all WW2

M60= Gas operated, open bolt, belt fed, shoulder fired machine gun.
MG-42= Recoil operated, open bolt, belt fed, crew served machine gun.
For offensive run and gun definitely the M60 as it has a more reliable cycling operation with gas power in comparison to recoil operation. The slower rate of fire is best for shoulder fire as the gun would not climb uncontrollably. The MG 42 would be best for defensive positions especially if the gun is mounted on a tripod with a crew operating it.

The M-60 was designed to have a slower rate of fire (roughly 650 rounds per minute) than the MG-42 (roughly 1, 200 rpm or was it 1, 600 rpm) because soldiers would not waste as much ammo and supplying that much more ammo would become a logistical nightmare. Beside the faster the rate of fire lead to breakdowns sooner.
