Cold-water immersion and heat therapy are among the biggest wellness trends of the past few years, but they have a long-standing tradition of being practiced around the world. Today, I’m excited to sit down with Dr. Susanna Søberg to discuss the benefits of cold and heat therapy and how they have the potential to activate our longevity pathways.

Dr. Susanna Søberg is a Ph.D. in metabolism and specializes in functional breathing and cold and heat exposure for health optimization. She is the Founder and CEO of The Soeberg Institute, where she teaches how to "stress up to stress down" using natural stressors. Her scientific discoveries have shown the minimum threshold for how much cold and heat we need to reap the health benefits. She is an international author of Winter Swimming, a number-one bestseller on Amazon. Her book has been translated into 13 languages.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Cozy Earth, BiOptimizers, and InsideTracker.

In Finland were I was born, this is a common practice still today. Many public saunas in Helsinki have access to either a dip in the frozen water or a roll in the snow.

I wrote to you yesterday asking you to cover this topic. Synergy! I took a cold shower this morning along with Wim Hof breathing and got my lowest blood pressure readings in a long time!

My parents are from Norway. Back in the 70’s my fathers friend (another Norwegian) developed arthritis and couldn’t work (hard labor) anymore. He went back to Norway in the winter to get cured of his arthritis. Came back the next spring cured. He took cold plunges in a frozen lake follow by sessions in a steam sauna cabin by the lake every day through out the winter. Most American would not do this. We just want a pill to make things better.

This is great information! I am living in Toronto, Canada and my husband and I have just purchased a wood burning sauna. We love it and all of the health benefits it will afford us over time, especially during our Canadian winters! ☺️

I just started the cold showers and it has greatly helped with the inflammation of knees and my back. It’s only been a few days but has helped greatly already!

Can you activate the parasympathetic or autonomic nervous system by taking a cold shower for long enough?

Does cold therapy also produce heat shock proteins? And are they as effective as the ones produced by sauna?

If my feet and legs wouldn't ache so much in icy cold water I would I would tolerate it for 15 seconds. Would that help some?

If showering, should you frequently douse your head or avoid very cold water on the head?

I love a hot sauna then cold plunge. Hot to cold, 3 times at lest is the magic.

Is it possible to find a functional medical doctor if I have only Veteran's Health care and Medicare ?
A year ago - I was working steadily and had good energy - then suddenly I got muscle fatigue - brain fog - muscle cramps - that have persisted to now .
My VA doctor finds nothing but elevated TSH and does nothing about it - all other indications are normal .
During this time, I have been having low BP and PR - 100 / 65 and 60 down to 55 BPM .
Only recently, I have had a few episodes of tachycardia where my PR went over 150 for a few minutes .

I want to find a doctor that will take my symptoms seriously and do a mercury test for sure ... I had several filling when I was young ( about 8 over 50 years ago ) and most of them have broken up and dislodged . Maybe I swallowed some of the particles ?
I want to be able to go back to work again ... In the last year - I have only felt good enough to ride my motorcycle about 7 or 8 times times . I really want to be able to do that again too .

I gave up listening to this video after 13 minutes because this researcher was TOTALLY confusing and just about as clear as mud. She knew she was talking to an American doctor and therefore the audience would contain Americans and she couldn't even bother converting the Celsius stats to Fahrenheit. As a matter of fact, she didn't even mention that she was referring to Celcius and that started things off on the wrong foot from the beginning. Dr Hyman had to keep interjecting that info repeatedly and was doing a commendable job. However, nonetheless, I was thoroughly confused, but worse of all, she appeared to be just as confused! She obviously did not prepare for this interview at all. This video could have been a coherent and concise 15 minute one instead of a laborious one hour 15 minutes. I wonder how many people just gave up. 🙄

It is better to invest now... You will never be younger than you are today and there will never be a perfect time to invest.. Due to compounding, which Einstein called the 8th wonder of the world, you can get rich slowly from investing if you do it from a young enough age.,

Doc, I love your info but it's extremely rude when you talk over your guest when they are still speaking..Just a little constructive
