China has already far surpassed America in selected areas of technology, not the least military technology.
But the most decisive aspect of such a conversation isn't the simple binary of whether China has overtaken the US in particular technologies, but the momentum at which both sides are continuing to push ahead in their research and practical implementation. In this aspect - momentum of development/implementation - it's already game over for America. The scenario of Beijing invading Taiwan simply isn't going to happen - because Beijing doesn't feel it necessary - unless Washington spoils for a hot conflict. Yet, it's now crystal clear that Washington doesn't have the wherewithal to trigger one in China's backyard because they just neither have what it takes to end it quick or win a war of slow burning attrition.

The window for America to arrest the progress of China through military conflict is past.
