So typical. Not usually what you see on YouTube channels, but the reality of travel through Japan. Stuff is closed when it's supposed to be open, the monkeys are out to lunch (and not just the ones on Trash Taste), an empty restaurant can't let you in because you didn't reserve, the hotel can be dodgy just as you described. Add the rain and the whole thing can be a downer. If you have only a week or two in Japan (plus jet lag to contend with during that time) it can be sh*t.

If you're into manhole covers and collecting stamps, I guess that might be a salvage job on a bummer vacation. Thankfully, you have more (and possibly better) days ahead.

You might want to try Toyoko Inn chain of hotels. They're usually near train stations, simple, but clean and offer quite a few amenities--including breakfast--for a reasonable price.

I find those Japanese castle ruins funny, because it seems decently well documented, but they don't bother building a replica to create a worth while experience.

I've had weird luck in Tokushima as well. Doesn't stop me from going back, though. The whirlpools are kind of fun if you can get there at the right time when the tide is going in or out.

I should warn you that the vine bridge was incredibly underwhelming but I really just wanted to drive around a bit and it was good for that. I stayed at the Sunroute and the Daiwa Roynet at Tokushima station and they were both pretty nice.

I think my favorite cities in Shikoku have been Kochi and Matsuyama. I need to spend more time in Takamatsu but the garden there is beautiful. Oh, and the ferries are pretty nice. I think I've taken the one from Wakayama to Tokushima, Oita to Yawatahama, and Yanai to Matsuyama.
