I haven't looked into this show, but I will. You're absolutely right about the challenges of those environments.

I just started watching this on my computer, it is pretty cool. I have 3 or 4 episodes to catch up to. Really cool video.

So many people are so quick to criticize. I think you did a good job trying to sum it up. Filming does make things SO much tougher. I've had it happen many times where i'm filming an up-close shot of me lighting a fire, and then when it catches I quickly try to move the camera for a different shot and .... yep, lost my fire. haha It can be such a pain, but as you said, the process can be very enjoyable. Especially when you get that footage all edited into a clean production. Its almost like you get to relive the adventure. Great video Crocket.

Good heavens, they are growing up fast! You are a good Dad. Hope to take my daughter out backpacking next week. Kind of hot in NY still. Keep up the videos! Please!

Thanks for the heads up.  You can't fully appreciate the effort until you have tried it.

The thing that I found most interesting about the show was how terrified they were of the bears, wolves, and cougars; and how helpless they felt without firearms. Environmentalists and conservations are constantly hammering the idea into everyone's heads that large wild predators aren't really a danger to humans; and if you do have a dangerous encounter with a large wild predator, then just make yourself look as big as possible and yell at them - that will make them run away; and if that doesn't work, then bear spray will be enough. These guys all had bear spray and they definitely didn't feel like it was adequate protection. Telling people bear spray is enough is one thing; having people surrounded by bears, wolves, and cougars helps them to realize that what they really need is a gun. I laughed out loud when that one guy said "Yelling 'Hey, bear!" doesn't work. I personally think that the wildlife officials, conservationists, and outdoor media outlets that are advocating that bear spray is superior to firearms have blood on their hands. They're sending naive people into danger because they're anti-gun and because they care more about the safety of wild animals than they do about humans. And the conservationists and environmentalists are even worse because they're bringing dangerous wild animals into people's communities.

Entertaining show, lot of likable youtube guys, lots of respect for all of them, the PNW is no joke, went there last year for a 3 day backpacking trip and we could not get a fire going until the last day when we got lucky and saw a hollowed out tree with dry wood inside, anyway great show, may the best man win!!

Great to hear your take on the show.. I'm trying to get Nat Geo to have Me You and Andy Tran on Ultimate Survival Alaska. We could be the team from the lower 48! I would love to give that a go.

I'd be interested to see a video of the 10 items you would take on the show

I've only seen the first episode, thanks for the tip on where to see more. I agree, when the bears are licking your feet in the dark and wolves are howling around you, being smart wins over looking brave for TV.  Thanks for the vid.

I haven't watched those but great points about real difficult situations vs the relative ease our many youtube filming environments!

I've only seen one episode, but I definitely agree about the keyboard warriors.  I have only done a little minimalist camping, but it is a very different proposition then fully equipped backpacking, and what these guys are doing is that far removed again.  It is pretty easy to critique from the comfort of your living room.

Thanks for making some sane comments amongst the massive amount of buffalo and chewing some have taken to on these guys.  They did it, or attempted to, and our butts weren't there, and we have no total idea, how we would handle the situation, even though I have massively matched up to Mitch, Alan, Joe, and Wayne in inventory and contact talks with them as well on situational awareness, and critical analysis.

I love the show and I commend all the guys just for going and trying it!, no one knows what they would do unless they are there and doing it, again love the show and learning so much from them too!

Who is gonna go the distance ??

Agree with you, on all your points...These guys are amazing indeed.
There is no need to be bully's to any of these guys. What they have done,
is go out there, challenge themselves, learned much, and returned home,
More humble, stronger and knowledgable than ever before.
I have only admiration for them..
Among many native Tribes of Canada and USA, there is an initiation Ceremony
called the Rite of Passage, Manhood ceremony,  Vision Questing...where a younge teenage boy would have all the survival skills, strongly intact...and is sent out to an area, for 2 full moons to test his abilities to find his life vision and higher purpose...if he returned before receiving the vision, he was given a humble position in the tribe, only until he completed the Quest for vision,  then he is held in high esteem and promoted among the men societies, and trained in spiritual leadership among the people. There learned strength, lessons and unique experience, is a benefit to the Tribe's future Survival.

These men here, are doing just that...but with a modern twist and modern tools...I say BRAVO to them all. cheers ;-)

I think the mind/mental attitude may be their biggest hurdle.  Alan Kay seems to be handeling the solitude and the preceived mental dangers pretty well...

I am totally hooked on it. It's kinda funny, most of the guys I thought would really hang through it have, just having the right mindset for the most part. I would love to say I could do it for the long haul, but these guys who tapped out early I couldn't say I wouldn't have done the same thing.

My money is on Alan Kay. His mental attitude is by far the best for this survival challenge. His preparedness and honesty with himself, makes his well suited for this challenge and anything else he may encounter in life. I would like to meet the man. If the SHTF I would want him on my team.
