In my garden I planted green onions and leave them yearly they regrow from there seeds and you can cut tops from greeens like this individual did or pull whole plant up, just leave the ones that flower to replenish for next year

then 3/4 will use for curry..&..
the remaining 1/4 will use as
breed to get onion plants
(spring onions )which will
use for another curry...

I use sambar(small) onion to grow spring onions. I don't cut off anything. Just plant them in soil. They too grow good. You can try that too once.
