In this episode of Long Automotive we take a deep dive into the state of the metal work underneath and inside of our 5 cylinder 122. I've decided that having the transmission out for inspection is a perfect time to address the remaining rust in the chassis, cleaning and stripping is the first step.

It's those rubber floor mats Volvo used back then, with some fibery sound deadening stuff underneath. Water will find a way under the mats, and then it stays there. If they used carpet, it would have a chance to dry out at some point.

The reason why the floor rots is because of a design fault. It orignates from the chassis members, look under the hood. Where it slopes down under the bulkhead.

Front foot wells rot ....see my comments re chassis members under the hood. That's why the floors rot.!!!!

dry ice will remove the tar mats in no time

Dirt and debris collect, stay wet and eventually rot the floor.

I might add, it's the only design fault on the whole car !!!!
