I have not taken any math classes since high school (7 years ago) and I found out last that I needed to place into college algebra and pass that class next semester or I would grid lock myself from getting my degree done by half a year. So I panicked and crammed to take the placement test in a week.

So when an x is where it was with the 13 and it equals something... does the something it equal automatically become a portion of the first number? (When displayed in that manner)

on the second problem when you multiplied the 5 on the right side why do you distribute instead of just multiplying it by the constant?

how could the 5 in the second example be simultaneously canceled out by division on the left and multiplied by the right side?? I'm baffled by that.
