As promised, here's my video explaining the differences between the Unearthed Arcana Bastions and the final version from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide. The differences are pretty minor, but there is one major update.

Thanks for watching!

Fabrication always felt a bit strong, but a 5gp cap for a lvl 17 room feels.. idk odd. If you want to create statues of you and your fellow adventurers how do you rule on the cost of those statues. Are they too expensive to be made?

Thanks for the video! I'm sad to see that the pub wasn't changed, because it has basic errors in it. I don't know how I feel about the removal of bastion points; it was nice to accumulate "productivity." Though, bastion points weren't implemented well. I'm very surprised that defenders didn't get changed with how much backlash there was in UA.

So if I'm hearing this correctly the special facility prerequisites have not changed.
And now four of the Bastion special facilities can craft (common/uncommon) magic items in one of four categories (new) of magic items.

Special Facility (Prerequisite) -> Category

Arcane Study (Arcane Focus) -> Arcana
Sacristy (Holy Symbol/Druidic Focus) -> Relics
Smithy (Fighting Style/Unarmored Defense)-> Armaments
Workshop (Expertise in a skill) -> Implements

And the Artificer, the crafty McCrafterson class of all crafters, meets precisely NONE of those four prerequisites.

They use a set Artisan's Tools or an Infused item as a spellcasting focus, not an Arcane Focus, Druidic Focus, nor a Holy Symbol.
They do not get a Fighting Style nor do they get Unarmored Defense
They do not get "Expertise in a skill" instead they get "Tool Expertise."

Top that off with how the Laboratory and Scriptorium (which do not have feature based prerequisites) can no longer craft magic items. So those options are also lost.

Sounds like if an Artificer wants to craft magic items at a Bastion they need to be there in person to assist someone else's Hireling, or else have to settle for getting a common magic item (Implement) via a Trohpy Room.

I know, I know. DM can make all and any exceptions they want to make.

But it's just frustrating, because I specifically addressed this problem in the Survey Feedback for Bastions and not only did they not fix it, _they made it worse._

I think that the barracks should have been a separate facility you have to pay for that doesn't count against the total amount of special facilities you can get (maybe even the armory). This way you won't feel like you're missing out on something.

I think they missed what makes a bastion fun. I would like it so much more if each bastion was a bunch of random tables you could roll on to create NPCs, customize your bastion aesthetically (by spending gold), and tell a fun story about what happened at the base while the player was away and maybe some lingering complications that the player must address or some in-game boons that open up some new adventures. This would actually give players a taste of being a DM like they stated they wanted, but this is just so focused on creating mechanical bonuses and D&D already has a bunch of that. The players can already hire NPCs to follow the crafting rules or run a business or buy things at magic item shops with their money or even buy the whole dang shop. I’m not sure why this was their focus like D&D 5e characters need more ways to gain stuff and money. Maybe I’m missing something, but this system seems to me like rolling on a roulette machine and hoping for something good and not a fun way to interject story elements and player driven quests.

Twenty minutes in and I finally understand why they chose to make this section in the first place! I think it repurposes the loot tables for dungeons and shows what a prospective high level villain lair might look like.

(Love the idea that after defeating a major henchman the players can take over his bastion - already having facilities made so that each player can repurpose one room, instead of looking through and trying to find the best combinations for options. Then as they level up/get stronger they can return their base and expand it based off what the characters have learned.)

TL;DR: Give your players an old school style dungeon map with numbers marking the center of each room when they defeat their first mini boss. It starts off having the base armory, barracks, etc already built. Each player can repurpose one room for their choice in the bastion list otherwise. After that each additional room is an add-on that requires builders or creative problem solving when they level up.

Armory cannot possibly be the same. It is seriously the worst design possible in the UA. You spend 1300 gp to give your bastion defenders 1d8 for one combat then you lose all of it and have to do it again. Meanwhile your bastion defenders requires you to take one recruit action to get 4 defenders. I mean... sure I like my NPC's. But why can they not keep their arms and armor between combats? They seem really stupid losing their belongings all the time. Maybe I should recruit some new ones that aren't idiots.

So as a Rogue, how would I set up my Bastion to crank out as many True Strikr scrolls as possible?

Nice work on this. I do hope you will do a vid on this as if you had a bastion (like a tutorial) but that may be to much.

When you hit the craft magical items can you let us know what skill you tools you need. What I mean is from the PHB for Potions healing you need proficiency with the Herbalism Kit. For scrolls it is proficiency in the Arcana skill or with Calligrapher’s Supplies. So for scrolls you no not need a tool. Since with out origin feats you may be limited to crafting only 1 subsection of magical items and may need to take more Origin feats to make Potion and boots ect.

I finally got a copy of the DMG and noticed that a line is in the printed DMG that lets you (when you level up) replace a special facility with a different facility that you qualify for. This looks like you can replace a 5th level facility with a higher-level facility once you get to a high enough level (as long as you fulfill any other requirements).

On a side note, the crafting rules involving crafting something with a spell requires the spell to be prepared and it looks like cantrips aren't prepared, they're known or learned. So you can't craft anything that involves a cantrip.

You could use the Bastion attack rules as a narrative mass combat tool. The players could assemble an army and depending on what they do on the battlefield you roll more or less d6s and the players army take looses. You could also use the War room lieutenants to mitigate loses

If no changes to armory. That pretty crazy. Removing BP points half fixes the Barracks. As does the changes to how attacks work.

Oh thank god the theater is still there in all its glory! I’m so glad that we can still force all our friends to participate in our off off OFF broadway productions or no budget indie films for very minor benefits and maybe pizza 😂

I like how you caution to want to roll low if you want adamantine armor - as if it mattered what you willed! Old superstitions die hard, though! ;-)

Sorry if this was covered in the livestream, but do certain buildings still have class/class group requirements or is it just class features?

Does the end of Bastion points mean that a character that has been sucked apart and devoured by a Shoggoth on a distant planet no longer appears, alive and well, back home the very next day? I can't see why that idea needed changing ...

It's crazy that Hag's Eyes and Brooms of Flying are supposedly so easy to make 😝

Curious if the bit where the Sanctuary room let you cast Healing Word as a 10th level spell made it through to the version you have. ("The spell’s level is half your level,
rounded down." 20/2=10) Like, it's just Healing Word so it isn't super breaking on its own, and it's only at max character level, but spells above 9th level are supposed to be a pretty big deal.

It reminds me a lot of the castle management in Pillars of Eternity, an awesome game.
