2014 Personality Lecture 16: Extraversion & Neuroticism (Biology & Traits)

Показать описание
Extraversion and Neuroticism are two of the Big Five Personality traits identified through statistical means in the last forty years. However, as propensity to positive and negative emotion, what they represent can be usefully and straightforwardly mapped on to underlying biological systems governing approach and incentive reward, on the one hand, and threat and anxiety, on the other.

Favorite line of the lecture: " I know that's a lot to take in, well doesn't matter that's how it is."

Never have I had such a profound joy for learning about something. The way he speaks just makes it come alive. I’m so grateful

I'm someone who is high in neuroticism and have always been confused as to why my response to negative emotion seems to completely inhibit progress in my life. My take away from this lecture was that in those situations where I am aware negative emotions are taking over I need to condition a more exploratory/approach response in order to overcome the paralysis caused by the negative emotion. I don't know if there are good techniques to help with this but maybe if I can try to examine my "plan" in those situations and "explore" the world more broadly that will put me in a more appropriate frame of mind. I have been getting the sense lately that a lack of introspection has been a large part of my problems.

The subpersonalities view of motivations is so interesting to me!

It also ties back to things from previous lectures like the rat experiments.

Love your work Dr. Peterson! Please continue!

About that hypothalamic cat that went hyperexploratory... my first image was that it was busy looking for his or her misplaced brain!! And how cats hate to leave a kitten behind, or to be left out of anything.

One day, when all humans truly appreciate all creatures and how much they teach us about ourselves, we will have the pleasure of the answer from the cat or collective cat - a personal theory waiting to be or not to be - himself or herself or "themself". Haha!! 🤔💓😅

This lecture had some p complex ideas that were a bit heavy to digest. A lot to take in for sure.

How did they separated the different brain levels? Chemical or surgery. 'cause there's some area on the upper brain that are used to treat the 5 senses.

I have yet to see a video showing someone how to fix exceptionally high neuroticism. It seems to be the scarlett letter of the Big Five that affects almost all the important parts of life: career, emotions, relationships. Does one with high neuroticism have any hope? (That's rhetorical, there is ALWAYS hope, but would love to hear your thoughts on it Dr. Peterson).

Love this! But I'm bricking it knowing I'm highest in trait neuroticism. Hopefully my IQ is high enough to spare me... ok I'm going to look for some dragons now.
