Now I'm just thinking about how hilarious it would be if we aren't alone, there are actually thousands of aliens out there, but we're all too shy to be the first ones to speak.

It's crazy how we can go so far into space, yet we still don't know what is at the bottom of our deepest oceans.

My main concern with contacting alien life is that they might have some alien virus that accidentally kills us. Native Americans were killed because they hadn't been exposed to European diseases so fail to see why a similar thing won't happen with humans and aliens. Plus my concern comes as a best case scenario where aliens are peaceful and try to help our species.

I think it's nieve of us to assume that other life forms in the universe would require a planet similar to ours. It's likely that other beings could survive in much harsher environments than us.

Wait a little until we can warp space-time and go beyond the limits of light speed, otherwise our signals are limited to a very small bubble of space in the scope of the known universe.

i think we shouldn't limit ourselves to our earth. It would be a shame if we miss out on all the wonders of the universe and eventually all die clueless

I hadn't thought about how that kind of thing would be expensive and really time consuming and I think you're right. We could be could putting the funding into more research on how to treat and prevent diseases, or more efficient renewable energy resources or heck, continuing to explore our own oceans.
There's no real definite benefit to contacting other intelligent life.

It's not a matter of choosing one or the other, we can do both! They are both important and worth funding.

The 'Science should focus on things on earth' Argument seen in the video and in the comments is flawed. Astronomers (and Bio-astronomers) are going to study and apply things in space. Science isn't a single, collective mass that we portion out to different fields. While solving world hunger and curing all cancers are great goals that should be funded, we can't really claim that this project is taking away from those projects. firstly because these are different people who do different things, and secondly because the main drag on scientific funding isn't other scientific funding, it's mainly due to poor budgeting and a non-interest of either officials or the people of a country. Arguing that Bio-astronomers and Astronomers should focus on things on earth is a lot like kicking the door into a mattress store and yelling about the lack of coffee shops in the area.

Coffee is a very important resource, but it's not the mattress company's job to provide it.
