Why Nintendo Took so Long to Make Something so Familiar: The Making of Switch 2

This Nintendo Switch 2 documentary details the development of the Nintendo Switch 2 console and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how Nintendo initially wasn’t sure whether to iterate on the original Switch’s design or make something completely new. Therefore, the team explored a variety of unique hardware concepts. The documentary also explores all the design decisions Nintendo made and shows how the developers applied Gunpei Yoko’s philosophy of “lateral thinking with withered technology”—the idea of repurposing mature, readily available technology in creative new ways.

It also takes a close look at all the hurdles Nintendo had to go through. The team initially wasn’t sure if backward compatibility would be possible, since the Switch 2 doesn’t feature any built-in Switch components. This made achieving compatibility with older titles far more complex. Additionally, it was a struggle to find the perfect name for the Switch successor. Fan favorite ideas like Super Nintendo Switch were on the list, but didn’t feel quite right for a particular reason.

The name switch 2 was definitely chosen because of the confusion with the name Wii U, there's no way to confuse Switch 2

I was not expecting you to publish a video that goes into detail about the development of the Switch 2, but I'm glad that you did. <3

Man, this system is way more impressive than I originally thought! You would never know just by looking at it that it had been developed from the ground up. When I first saw it I thought it was simply a more powerful iteration of the existing system, especially since they pushed for backward compatibility. It is very impressive, and I do think it is worth $500 for those who can afford it. I will stick to my second hand Switch Lite for now, but maybe in a few years I'll buy a second hand one, or maybe there will be a Switch 2 Lite and I'll get that.

As someone following the switch 2 for years this was an amazing video that makes me feel even better about the console thank you!

That editing is SO SMOOTH.

Imma bet you used After Effects on this instead of traditional editor software because this is practically fully animated graphics through and through. Heck impressed. ^^

Wow it's always cool to see the struggles of people who worked on the product

Tetsuya Sasaki looks like the bad guy/boss in a lawyer/detective game. Like he's been waiting 20 years to get back at you for something you did to him when you were both 12 years old.

This is the video people need to be watching. It's not complaining about everything that's wrong with the console (and there are quite a few that I myself am not happy about) and it's not claiming that this is going to be the best console ever. It is simply stating information that people don't know and giving new insight of some choices that were made behind the scenes. Honestly, I just wish this video had been longer to explain other issues that people are complaining about. But then again, maybe that was a good choice considering the number of angry comments on hundreds of Switch 2 videos...

It is so funny hearing "due to hardware limitations" on a console from 2016. I'm so used to hearing that when talking about like the N64 or PS1

I'm not a big fan of Nintendo, but this video was very insightful. Ngl, before watching it, it felt like Switch 2 would be just a slightly more powerful Switch 1. Glad to see how much effort they put to create inovations.

I really appreciate how thoughtful they were when designing Switch 2. What makes the Switch family of systems great is the flexibility it affords for gamers to play however they want. With the Wii and WiiU especially, because you had different control styles, it felt like a burden to developers. But with the Switch family of systems, developers can make or port their games as they see fit. And I am really loving the third party support. Also, Mouse Mode is such a great idea with how it opens doors for a multitude of games, while also being familiar enough with consumers.

1. Super Switch would've been a mid name
2. They don't want another Wii U situation so they're playing it safe with the name Switch 2

This console really looks like a huge improvement over the Switch in every single way. It's got more power, a better screen, backwards compatibility, built-in camera and mic for chat and also a mouse functionality as a cherry on top. I wonder what gimmick they'll add to make an eventual Switch 3 stand out (who knows if consoles will even be a thing in another 7 or 8 years) because just making a more powerful Switch 2 doesn't sound like them but at this point I don't know what else a console could even do.

this was a VERY good video, shows people more about the system and sheds some light on the goods about it

Cool video. I'll never go out of my way to buy one, but was nice to learn about.

Switch 2 definitely makes way more sense to me than Super Switch. Sure super switch sounds good but what to you do past that. By the time the Switch 6 comes out other naming convention would be making a "Mega Ultra Super Duper Switch Plus"

I just got a Switch OLED from Ebay and it's actually my first ever Nintendo console. I really love it so far, even though I've basically used it to play nothing but Balatro 😅

Remember people who worried "what if the magnetic controllers fall off and the console breaks?"
In my mind, I was thinking "they've been working on this for years; I'm sure they already solved that problem"

and this video shows just that seems to be true for every part of Switch 2. It's really refreshing to hear the console being described by the creators themselves, through the words in their interviews. You can hear the passion they have for it.
