In this first part of my new series on teaching grammar to ESL students, we focus on speaking activities for the present simple. The present simple is one of the first main grammar tenses that English students learn. The tense has many functions and in this video we explore how we use the present simple to perform these functions.

I explain a variety of activities that promote these functions and will demonstrate to your students how they use the present simple in a practical way. There are many functions associated with this tense but I focus on 3 of the most common ones and show you how a number of tasks you can carry out in class to perform these functions.

This series on teaching grammar will avoid a traditional approach to teaching grammar where there is a focus on the form and structure. In my videos I focus on how we use these tenses to perform the related functions to give students a more real sense of the tense.
