I mean, he is absolutely right.
Canon and lore are the things that hold the fictional settings together.
Too many people seem to believe that fantasy = "lol so random, anything goes".

The very idea of internal consistency or coherency of the settings seems to be like this incomprehensible, lovecraftian horror for modern screenwriters.

That said... It is rich coming from the guy who sold the rights to his own creations to soulless Hollywood hacks.

The difference is that GRRM, like George Lucas, are the creators if they choose to change canon that is their right, it's their world, but when someone else who has been invited to play with their toys changes things it's a problem because unlike the creators they lack the overall picture and how said changes impact it.

Interesting that this comes out a day after Polygon writes an article called “Why Continuity Doesn’t Matter (And Never Has)” This is such a dumb take, as without continuity, any character can do anything at anytime, and it doesn’t matter. There are no stakes, no consistency, and no story. Get rid of continuity and you get rid of storytelling itself.
