He was disappointed and the look is obvious. The actor did say that Varys was robbed of having a last meeting with nemesis Littlefinger. I hate what they did to his character. They made Varys careless than what we know him to be.

I remember season 3 episode "The Ladder" When I just thought: "Man, what a dialog Varys vs LittleFinger this was! Their battle is gonna be awesome!! " How innocent I was.

You witness four great actors reacting to horrible, insulting script-writing. Conleth rocking back and forth in his chair, Emilia throwing a sympathetic look towards him, Lena taking a deep breath in disbelief and trying to comfort him, as does Gwendolyn when she sees it. You see four actors seriously pissed and confused at shit writing. There HAS to be something wrong, when the four of them in the camera's center react that way. I honestly wanted to see the looks of the others at the table, but I guess everyone/most of them shared the same feelings as Conleth and the girls sitting next to him. "Tyrion is heartbroken, John is disturbed[...]", I guess, that counts for their respective actors as well.
Congrats, D&D. I "applaude" you for ruining an outstanding book/series with generic, bullshit writing, which completely ruined the flow and believable development of the series. Your outstanding mediocrity has poisoned and killed something great. You are the guys who tried to copy the essays of their fellow students, because your creative streak is as bland as the blank papers you were staring at, when confronted with writing something unique or individual 👍👍👍

I honestly cannot believe the wrote the scripts for these final episodes, went through table reads like this, saw the reactions from the actors who had played these characters for nearly a decade and still did nothing to change them. D&D completely fucked over the entire cast and fandom with Season 8 and I hope they never work again.
