I really love old chinese action film because of this, they emphasize the "The actor need to be skilled", they cast actual martial artist to do action movie and they absolutely cook.

And then theres ewan and hayden just swinging metal poles at each other full force and well within range so fast the team had to tell them to slow down.

Essentially, they take the downsides of the reverse grip and turn it into safety measures. A testament to how bad it is.

Also, from a writing perspective, it works really well as a visual que that the character is subversive and atypical, both in how they fight and (usually) how the see the world/interact with it.

Reminds me of a Dr. Mike reaction video where he criticized a chest compression scene for not pushing the chest deeply (as it would be done properly in real life), but then he remembered that pushing the chest deeply could cause rib fractures and he immediately understood why the scene was done that way.

The other thing it does is it gets the actors closer together for the close-up shots.

Also having the actors closer to left her makes getting good looking shots a lot easier

"that tracks" sigh, opens comments

edit: why are all the top comments just "baseball, huh?" related and has nothing to do with swords

Goddamnit. I was so excited to make a comment about Gladiator 2 scenes where they used reverse grip, but-

Baseball, huh?

And there's also the fact that it helps keep the actor's face unobstructed for certain shots, some of which may not make it into the final cut.

Reverse-grip also gives AURA. It's like saying "I can hold my sword in this inconvenient way and still beat yo ass without sweating."

In choreography reverse grip makes it seem with the right effects that you are eliminating enemies with minimal effort as well with spins and twists.

I came to the comments for "Baseball, huh?"

I wasn't disappointed

This is the best use for reverse grip aside from running away from battle

The reverse grip can only be useful in ONE case: when you are in the stalls with an opponent, you are on top, and you are with a knife. Then the reverse grip is useful because you can use your other hand to put pressure on the knife. That's it, it's never needed anywhere else.

I wanna point out that Starkiller (and as far as I remember Ahsoka too) only use the sword in a reverse grip in a stance/transportation. In fight the reverse grip is usually switched to normal, which is extra movement, but at least looks cool.

Even when I didn't know a lot about real and historical sword fighting and combat in general I still didn't know what reverse hand grip was good for but I thought that the choreographers knew more than I did so I assumed there must be a good reason for it somehow I just didn't know about.
