During production of the movie in 2005, Peter Laird stated that the movie is set in it's own universe on his blog, which explains why the 2007 Turtles appeared separate from the 90s ones during the multiverse scene in Turtles Forever. However, the director of TMNT stated that it is canon to the previous movies which explains the wall at the end of the movie and why they're always marketed together.

UPDATE. The original quote by the director, Kevin Monroe, states that Peter Laird didn't want to reboot, so he apparently changed his stance on 2007 TMNT being in its own universe, but he didn't want it to necessarily "play" with the rest of the franchise. It is a standalone sequel. Here is the quote: "The memento wall was a way to try and have TMNT play in continuity with the earlier, live-action films, " explains Munroe. "I probably would have done a complete reboot if presented with the idea. But Pete was pretty adamant about not doing a reboot while not necessarily having TMNT play with the rest of the franchise. So, I just took a stand and said, 'Yes, TMNT exists with the other films.'" The source for this is on the Wikipedia page for the 2007 movie.

Yep the 2007 turtles are the same ones from the 90’s trilogy

FUN FACT: In the brazilian version of the movie, he's called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Returns" so it would make sense if the movie is a sequel to the classic turtles trilogy.

In a weird way, this technically means that we already gotten a fourth tmnt movie sequal to the live action movies, it’s just that this one is animated this time lol😆

I caught that the first time I watched it and I was stoked. I know some people don't like it but the fight scene between Ralph and Leo had me like, "it's about damn time!"

The 2007 TMNT movie is a sequel of all 3 of the original 1990’s live action movies. The 2007 TMNT film and the 1990 live action films are also based on some of the Ninja Turtles comic books as well as a lot of their tv shows and movies are. They had some sequels and prequels planned for the 2007 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie but unfortunately they were cancelled films for some odd reason. They also had a third movie planned for the 2014 and 2016 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles however that one was cancelled too. Some of these shows and movies get cancelled and we don’t always know why.

I caught this when I first watched it and always just seen the 2007 was a follow up to those films. Its a underrated TMNT entry.

TMNT 2007 IS THE SECOND BEST TMNT ADAPTATION OF ALL TIME 🗣️ I wish we could’ve gotten a trilogy out of that. It wasn’t a perfect movie but mannn….better than everything that came afterwards

Connecting them actually makes a Lot of sense when you hear that it's after Shredder's "Death" & the storyline the Foot take.
I totally missed these Easter Eggs & that's Awesome!!

Okay this actually makes sense. But this would also make this the 4th movie to those live action movies

Yes, they are connected. The 2007 movie was intended to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV but so many people hate it that this little detail has gone unacknowledged for sixteen years so far except in it's multi disc marketing with the first three movies as pointed out by MegaDrive96 below.

I think the way it's set up is that it's not an explicit sequel, but rather it's a case of "Well there's nothing that says it can't, so it could be if you want it to."

My theory is that it is it’s own universe but had very similar if not identical events to the live action movies.

I don’t like to think of it as in same continuity mostly due to the characters. They’re all very different from their 1990s counterpart with maybe the exception of Raphael and splinter. April, Leo, Donnie and Mikey seem too different to me

It's a "loose sequel" meaning that it's universe had the same events occur from the three movies but in its own separate universe and style.

I never knew there were other tent movies besides this one growing up and I was confused as to what happened to the shredder and stuff. Ran into the 90s trilogy and fell in love with them and thought this movie was the fourth. THEN I found out this one had a comic that goes before it. Quite a roller coaster I went on 😅

I remember having a DVD case if the first three cases and this movie. The fact that there together in the same case could mean something.

I just assumed it was based on were they are in there lives

That makes it even better. If so, then 2007 animated Tmnt film is much more serious than It's predecessor films which is a nice addition of change of what we've seen previously.
