I just re-watched. Yep, this is the best condensed explanation of what phenomenology is that I've seen. (I just have trouble with 'Hyoo-sirl'.... :^)

Really good explanation except for what was going on in the background music. Wish there was a version without the annoying kindergarten music in the background.

Thank you! You have basically saved my life, haha! I have read Husserl and Heidegger before, a long time ago, but I always struggled to understand phenomenology. I was reading an article in which the article said "I will treat this through the lens of phenomenology" and my immediate thought was "oh no..." Happy I stopped to come here and look for some quick and clear explanation, such as yours!

Thanks! This 5 min video explained a lot more than the 600 pages book I just read.

This is true. The reality i see is not the same reality you see. That's why people have different tastes, for example. They even see one and the same person differently. For example, have you heard anyone saying you look like this or that when you clearly see in the mirror that you don't? Or that someone resembles some celebrity and you think- not even close. It's true, individual reality is different depending on person, which rises the question - what is real reality? And how can one experience it.

Thanks a million. This is among the best introductions to Phenomenology that I have ever seen. Keep up the good work.

After my fellowshipping with Jesus Christ after my fellowshipping with him when I was in 2nd grade he went on to understand my intentionality. Terrill TC!

"... stark distinctions between the outer 'real' reality, and the individual experience of reality." See, there's an issue right there: Scientific Materialism (the idea that the matter & energy around our bodies is the only truly 'real' thing) is so entrenched in our modern psyches that we can only regard other approaches (e.g. Phenomenology) as a curiosity that's become unhinged from common sense. Yet in historical terms, Materialism is a pretty new idea. But in our times, it _owns_ us. :^{
I do really appreciate this brief video overview, though!

I think the philosophy of phenomenology has its contribution to upgrade the capacity of independent thinking of each individual in a society, and therefore phenomenology is helpful for a country in the development of democratic process.

I genuinely do not get the idea why philosophy and associated discourse have to rely on heavy terms. this approach is the reason why philosophy is not accessible to the masses. the irony is that Philosophy is exactly the key to better understanding of self and our environment. it is the answer to a ton of problems we as an individual and as a society face today.

But no, instead of recognizing it and attempting to make philosophy easy to understand and access, you just had to go and make it complicated with complicated terms and narratives.

In contrast to Decartes' deductive reasoning, Husserl said that
Reality can be grasped through 'structures of Consciousness', through a process of intentionality and bracketing.

Thank you very much for a concise and clear explanation of Phenomenology.

First part is Husserl and his pursuit of essence; the thing to itself. Now the tricky part is how to get the subjective from objective. Intentionality perhaps helps. And we assume consciousness. But this consciousness is not the objective consciousness that we automatically leaps. I think I am not wrong in saying this is a first person subjective perspective.
Then second part is Heidegger's thoughts. Heidegger reverses the thought of investigation. Natural attitude comes before the scientific project of pursuing essence (much like Sartre who says existence preceeds essence, then Derrida reverses the logic of metaphysics). Heidegger's subject is the Dasein (therefore Heidegger's interest is again, is the natural attitude, which as Dasein lives it and contemplate Being).
The video was good.

Somewhere i came across a neat definition of phenomenology attributed to Heidegger: The analytic description of intentionality in its a priori.

1:07 Phenomenology seeks to understand the outside world as it is interpreted by and through human consciousness?
