Thousands of people have taken to the streets of West Bengal, India, to condemn the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at a Kolkota hospital.

Under the slogan "Reclaim the Night", demonstrators called for more action against violence on women. Smaller protests also took place in other cities around the country. Sexual violence against women is on the rise in India, with an average of ninety rapes every day reported in 2022.

The protesters held a candle lit march at midnight coinciding with the start of India's independence day celebrations. Many expressed frustration over the state of women's safety in modern-day India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for swift justice in cases of violence against women.

India is doing nothing. As an Indian doctor I can assure u our safety is at risks everyday. Anything can happen anytime. Not safe even in our own hospital rooms.

The prime minister talked about the issue only because it happened in a state where his party is not in power and he can point finger at someone else.

Had it happened in a state ruled by his political party, he would never ever have even mentioned it.

The more you hear about India, the less you want to go there. What should be a superior culture turns out to be rank brutality.

Few months ago a young Brazil woman were gang raped in India when she was out with her husband. It happened in broad daylight . now this. What’s happening in India? As a nation, everyone should be shamed by this.

Watch out in the comments... You might offend an Indian man who is happy with the status-quo. There's always a few lurking around.

We want justice there is no any indipendence day until the girls feel indipendent in india 😢there are a lot of cases that doesn't come in front of public just because rapists are in their family Even girls don't feel safe at home, as a Indian, girl, daughter and mother. We all women want justice 🙏🏻

Why say 'our' mothers, sisters and daughters? Why not just say 'women of our country'?
This goes to show the deep-rooted possessiveness we Indians have over 'our' women.
The problem is cultural and way more deep-rooted than anybody is willing to admit.

Ask Modi, why he is not saying a word for Females in Manipur, are facing the same in state, under BJP rule. That's like shouting for one against keeping mum for thousands . It's shameful for PM on Independence day.

Cows are safer than in india... Number of unreported cases are far higher than reported cases...Most women don't report or tell anyone because of Indian societal structure

India a country that tries to put a "We are developed" front on for the world, while being extremely underdeveloped. Over populated which causes both labor and resource shortages, and has extremely poor infrastructure, about 1 train crash every week.
EDIT I seemed to have offended a few Indians with thw way they are talking.

Sadly Just another rape case in India.
India has a big problem and everyone admit it but no one know what’s the solution.
Also Main problem is delegating women as this mother, sister, daughter holy trinity and the rest of women as fair game to be harassed if not assaulted.

Doing nothing. Judicial system in India is the most useless thing. There is no consequences for crimes and this encourages the criminals.

Think about it, the PM gave a similar speech when this happened Nirbhaya, that was the time he took charge as PM for the first time. The whole world was expecting some reforms would happen in the judicial system, a stringent laws like the Middle East would be implemented against rapists and other violent crimes against women’s but nothing happened. It’s been 12 years and averaging 90 rapes per day in 2022 and one of the hideous crimes yet again in the hospital, where people/women think they are safe. 😢
The same speech again and I don’t think this government is gonna do anything about this as well!

Indian prime minister isn't serious about rapes or women harassment. It was clear from his silence on Manipur and athletes protest. I'm not blaming just prime minister, it's the Indian society that is not liveable for women.
