Farmer Protests Highlight Growing Rural Distress in India

A massive protest by farmers in the Indian capital has turned the spotlight on growing rural distress in the country. Farmers say many have been driven into debt because agriculture is no longer profitable. The deepening anger among India’s rural community could hurt Prime Minister Narendra Modi in next year’s elections, more than half the country of 1.3 billion people depends on farming, and they are an important voting bloc.
