Special Rules for Garbage Trucks on the Road | California Personal Injury Lawyers

Did you know that garbage trucks have special rules on the road? They don't have to abide by all the same traffic rules that we have to. For instance, garbage trucks can park and operate in and on bicycle lanes. They can operate in parking spaces. They can stop in locations where most cars are prohibited, such as loading and unloading zones. And they also don't even have to stick to their side of the road. They can encroach on the other side of the road. There's various restrictions that they don't have to abide by when they're actively loading and unloading debris.

So if you are in an accident with a garbage truck, you need to look at whether they were actually in the course of doing the job of removing trash or were they on their way to or from the job, because those are different rules that apply, depending on what the truck was doing at the time.

There are a couple of extra requirements, though, for garbage trucks. For instance, they now have to have, or they have for a long time, had to have backup lights and alarms so that you can hear them when they're backing up. We can all hear it. It's way too early in the morning when we hear it, but we hear the beeping of the garbage trucks as they back up. Another thing that recently was required of garbage trucks is that they need to have backup cameras so that they can safely back up without injuring people.
