To be fair, there is name with weird meanings in every languague and Attila's Brother (who supposedly had the same rank as Attila until his death) was just called "Bleda the Hun" so unless "Bleda" means something simlar like "The big father" or "the mother of the Huns" i will keep thinking that Attila's mother had really great hopes for his kid XDDD

Atta/𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 means father in Gothic, -ila/-𐌹𐌻𐌰 changes a noun into a name (Wulfila/𐍅𐌿𐌻𐍆𐌹𐌻𐌰 = is a name meaning wolf/wulf) The goths were both fleeing Attila and a major part of his recruits so we are probably hearing what they called him. Attila looks like this in Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌹𐌻𐌰

We can call him Greg, just as a kind of place holder.

At least in the US I think we have a similar situation with Gandhi. I would wager if you asked people his name, the majority of the answers would be Mahatma, his title, not Mohandas, his name.

There’s what we know, what we don’t know, what we don’t know that we don’t know, and what we really should know

Reminder that the Huns, through their traditional colors, represented pretty much all the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse described in revelations. Although it generally lines up with central Asian traditions of using colors to indicate cardinal directions, still something that would have been very distant knowledge to a Mediterranean writer, as opposed to a Persian or Bactrian one who might have some familiarity.

Attila’s band = the black horse
The Hephtalites/White Huns= White horse
The Kidarites/Red Huns = Red horse
Blue Xionites = Pale Horse

Basically, when the Hunnic invasions began in the late 4th century, to many Christians it was a valid belief to see it as the beginning of the apocalypse described in revelation.

As a hungarian, it was a pleasure to hear him pronouncing Attila in such a correct way. Thumbs up for that!

I think it's really funny how the anger between Romanians and Hungarians runs back almost 2 millennia to their proto forms

Historians going back in time.

“Oh mighty warlord what is your true name?”

“Bob, Bob Attila. I wanted to go by Bobby but my war council thought it would be weird calling my domain the Bobby empire.”

In Turkic languages we do have a men's name "Atilla". When I was in the high school learning history our teachers made sure we don't confuse Atilla and Attila as they told us they are completely different. Never told us why, but I guess what you explain here in this video is the answer
