I majored in English because I love reading and writing but I didn't know what I was going to do afterwards. Originally I was interested in publishing, but instead I found a more niche industry: helping make and promote educational content on the internet! :) -Paola

English majors are so flexible! I have a BA in Creative Writing and an MA in English Literature, and I'm an academic advisor in a science and engineering college now!

I love reading, writing, and working with language, so I majored in English. That part about having a lot of potential options spoke to me and my job search because I have been open to so many things--as long as I'm using my writing or editing skills, I'm happy. Currently, I'm on the editorial team for a biomedical journal. My specific job does not require me to understand the content of the articles; rather, my work involves communicating with authors, reviewers, and editors, as well as checking the manuscripts for quality control and formatting.

I studied literature for undergrad and it was the best choice ever! The skills you learn as an English major (critical thinking, writing, creative/innovative thinking, analysis, etc.) have served me incredibly well. I work in tech now and all of the skills I’m most valued for were developed while studying English. It won’t provide you with a clear career path, but if you can advocate for yourself and don’t mind navigating ambiguity, this degree pays off.

I was an English major and then I got a Masters in Library Science (which did not require an English major, but most of my cohort were English majors). Now I’m a Youth Librarian

I studied English and my first job out of college was as a document reviewer (looking through documents from a company suffering a data breach, in order to find private personal information like SSNs, birthdates, financial info, etc) and one of the things the recruiter said when she interviewed me was that my English degree told her that I would be able to read through large amounts of data and pinpoint the important stuff very quickly. And I believe it did!!!

I double-majored in English and Computer Science and graduated with a BA. As the video said, English is a great area of study to pair with a STEM career path because writing and critical thinking is extremely important there too!

I am now working as a Software Engineer, where I exercise a mix of technical programming skills and high-level critical thinking skills on a day to day basis. My writing skills also come in handy when I have to write/update documentation and author blog posts about new products and features!

I live in a third-world country far from the US and I major in English Studies because I fell in love with English as a kid and I've always loved reading and writing. I absolutely enjoy studying in my major right now! People tend to ask me what job I will get as an English degree, and while I have my heart set on writing, publishing, editing, or translation, I know that I have a lot of doors open.

Currently I am a bachelor student of English Literature. I chose my degree because first of all I love reading (duh!) and I also enjoy expressing my thoughts and thinking critically about what is going on in the world around me. I've always been curious about human behavior but instead of focusing on it in a field like anthropology, I prefer to investigate it in the context of literature, because not only it is quite informative but also it is really fun to explore!! I also have had the privilege of attending courses from other departments (for example Animal Behavior) to make up for the concreteness that the abstract nature of literature might lack. If you are a person who is always up for adventure and exciting revelations about humans and the world around you, I assure you that this major will not leave you disappointed! 😉

i’m planning on creative writing because it’s my passion. most of my friends are going the engineering or premed route, which have “guaranteed” jobs, which makes me a little worried. but i want to go to college for something i’m interested in learning, not for job training

i’m currently a creative writing major at my community college bc there wasn’t a clear set path for english majors, and i love it! the only thing that makes me conflicted is whether i will continue to study it as a minor under english as a major, or change to literature. at this point i might do both since i can’t choose lol

I majored in both English and Physics which was.... something. Double the flexibility but also double the indecision for sure LOL. I did love both majors though; it's a double edged sword with the lack of a particular direction, but as long as the work is put in to find a path later it all works out I think.

05:11 Anyone else notice that typo on the slide? Oh, the irony of misspelling “language” in a video about majoring in English! This reminds me of the time the company I was working for set out hundreds of table tents in the company cafeteria, announcing the formation of a “Lanuage Club.” Or perhaps you are just exploring the ways that “langauge” is used both creatively and intentionally! 😉

I just started my journey. I’m at my local community college working on my credit hours for my associates in arts. I plan on transferring to local university for my BA program. I’m am beyond excited! I can’t wait to achieve these skills to improve my writing and reading. Getting the chance to read books and do research, do essay and everything in between sounds so fun. I’m ready. I also am thinking about a certificate program from google in the future.

I am an english major and I love it! It is my second major actually since my school requires people to do double major since a single major plus a minor is not enough.

I studied Geology in that time I thought I wanted to go into Mathematics or Computer Science but I din't have the requirements to go into those majors, so I keep finding something that had both and now I have finished my degree and my master degree in Geoinformatics which is a field who helps us understand maps and how the world changes from the climate change to politics. Also I continue now that I am job hunting to do seminars in computer programming so I can Iearn how to make maps more easier and I also do another seminar career choosing and the psyckology of it all as I am interested in that as well and is the main I see theese series because it may help me understand one day how with my skills from my studies to help students in my country and others to make the right for their university years. So thank you very much for this amazing series.
