China's Social Credit System: Fact vs. Fiction

The idea of a nationwide social credit system in China was put forward in 2011. In the decade since, the social credit system has sparked a wave of media coverage, much of it sensationalist and full of inaccuracies.

What exactly is the social credit system - both as it is envisioned, and as it stands today? What are the perceived benefits and risks? And what will the system look like in another decade?

On June 23, Jeremy Daum, a senior research scholar in law and senior fellow at the Paul Tsai China Center; Dai Xin, an associate professor of legal theory at Peking University Law School; and Vincent Brussee, an associate analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), joined a live webinar to mythbust the social credit system.

The comments are 40% meme, 40% people that don't realize their own country is watching them as closely as China is, and 20% people who are just interested in learning about it

The fact is that I never want it anywhere else, but alas we will all be shackled eventually.

If you are doing "myth debunking", the least you could do is giving source of the documents you're citing, especially the legal ones.

Otherwise, you're just adding more to the "mythos", so to speak, just more hearsay to further confuse the audience.

It speaks volume of your credentials when a bunch of professors can't even do something as simple as citations.

USA got a similar thing, but nobody demonize them. The history of credit is quite similar. You can have a loan if you have been a good person (financially speaking).

The government should never have the power to determine someone's worth. Even if it's working now, they've laid the ground work for something far more nefarious. All it would take is one law change.

So who exactly gave You the rights to judge other people and take their freedoms and limit their rights? God? By using this system, You not only judge, but also prosecute and condemn i one instance, preventing normal functioning and increasing social stratification! Bad, wrong system.

Nice propaganda, but this still doesn't address the greatest long-term negative impacts this could have on society. Not to mention, the more it gets implemented, the bolder the CCP will be. The key to totalitarian systems is to first foster complete dependency through "innocent measures." Once dependent, this is when systems like this really get going.

Ohhh there isn't a physical that sounds soooo much better 🙄. Why do you or anyone else think you need to know what, when, where I'm spending my money. Or even the amount of money I'm spending. All these other examples that you give we already have these in place. To me it sounds like you're trying to make it sound like a positive thing for the people. It's a government/corporation information grab on the citizens. Even if this is all true what you say, this leaves so much open for expansion in the future after this is implemented. Very sketch
