China's 'Social Credit Score System' - Fact or Fiction?

Western government & the Western media have deliberately lied about China operating a central "social credit score" system driven by political and ideological criteria.

However the same Western sources admit upon further examination that this is a myth, that no such system exists, and the multitude of systems China does use are for tracking and punishing what would be considered serious offenses anywhere.

Well done Brian. This meme about the social credit system just never seems to disappear, and yet, after 7 years in China, I have yet to find a single instance of it. The "crosswalk" example is quite funny. It's just about losing points for your driver licence, a system that exists in many countries (including Canada where I come from). Of course, in China there are speed cameras everywhere, so that makes the system both cheaper and more effective. Getting people to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks requires a combination of education and "repression". It's only beginning in China, which has a very young "driving culture". Few years ago, nobody would stop. And now, in Hangzhou where I live, drivers are starting to follow the rule. Not all, but enough to make a difference. I cannot even say the same for my home country!

I first heard about this "credit score system" some years ago from Stephen Colbert's show where they mocked it to the fullest, and being a propagandized fool who bought into US liberalism back then I asked my brother who worked and lived in China for decades if it's true. His response was: what was that? how come I never heard of it? With that and many other events since then, I'm proud to say that I've stopped watching Colbert and come out of this American delusion.

Thanks for this Brian. I live in China and nobody here talks about the much hyped 'social credit system' because it doesn't exist. Scoring systems like that have been experimented with but never widely adopted. Ant Financial's credit score is actually a boon for small businesses as they could not get loans from bank previously - no credit rating, no bank loan. As for the 'points' you lose for not stopping at crosswalks, those are points on your driving license, which is a system they have in most developed countries (China's roads were very chaotic 20 years ago). I lost 6 (half the total) for running a red light, but I deserved it. The points vanished after 1 months, which is quite lenient. Even on the trains, you would have to really persist transgressions to get banned.

In the US, every citizen is assigned a number - a Social Security number "SSN" -, every citizen has a credit score for financial credit attached to you SSN ; your housing score is attached to your SSN so if you had an eviction for example its attached to your record and its almost impossible to rent a house/apartment again, driving record is attached to your SSN , tax record too, it goes on .... . Government agencies can input the SSN of every citizen and pull out all their records at once .

We have credit check score here in the UK for many years. I have to do credit check before I can get a loan.... we also get censored on social media for going against the government narrative, the payment system such as PayPal has closed many peoples PayPal accounts already for saying things on social media that the company does not agree with

I have been living in China for a decade plus and I'm a permanent resident here so I guess I can confirm first hand that there isn't a Social Credit Score System here... but no matter how many time we could explain that to people outside, they won't believe us because ¨Bee Bee See¨ said that ¨See See Pee¨ did, haha!.
