In episode one I will be introducing Elvis to the concept of leash pressure. This is how you will teach your dog to turn off pressure by complying: Put a leash and collar on your dog and start to pull the dog in one direction, when your dog puts on the breaks, continue to pull, until the dog moves with the pressure of the leash. Once he moves with the pressure, you immediately release the pressure and then reward. You will place your dog in all the obedience positions using leash-pressure only.

For a sit, you will apply slow, steady pressure upwards until your dog sits. For a down, you will apply slow, steady pressure downwards until your dog lays down (elbows touching the ground). For the heel, you will use leash-pressure to guide your dog into the heel position. Anytime you use leash-pressure; it is imperative to turn off the pressure once your dog makes the decision to go into the position.

It is really nice seeing a whole training session from start to finish. A lot of videos will show the basic concept of what they are trying to do, then stop recording and show the end product. I think it is important to see how you work through the middle part! Also, Elvis is such a beautiful dog! He is having so much fun with the training! I really hope he ended up getting adopted!

Awesome video Nate 👏 My favorite part is when Elvis finally went into the side down without your help, how happy and excited you were and the genuine affection you gave him. I can only imagine how proud of himself he was to make you proud of him 😁🥰❤️

Awesome tutorial Nate. I volunteer at a shelter and some dogs know Zero commands. I have been struggling with the “down” more than the sit and find myself giving up too fast. Watching this made me realize what I’m doing wrong and I’ll implement the tips presented from now on. 👍

They say old is gold, this is a video from 1 year ago, everything you say I do, it all works.
Thank you

I love how the camera may as well not be there. You are totally there for that dog, not the audience. A subtle but very meaningful contrast with most trainers.

I really enjoyed watching the first episode training Elvis, you make it easy to understand just what you want him to do with lease pressure!

What I really like about this one is that it's an untrained rescue dog and not an intelligent Malinois or German Shepherd. Plus the additional commentary really helps bring home some of the points which you see on your other videos, but you can see when they're being applied. Also love seeing your patience, the amount of verbal (and fun) praise you give, and knowing when to stop. All things I'll have to remember when I get my pooch!

Thanks Nate. Great video as always. Both the commentary and no commentary parts are great. Elvis did a great job too.

Hi Nate, congratulations for your channel and your work! Very often I find myself smiling like a child when I see you having true fun training dogs (like in the piggyback command with Arry). Here I’ve got a little bit confused when you used the “free” marker instead of your classic “yes” marker every time you rewarded Elvis, even if you went towards him and he was static. Cheers man! You rule! Respectfully: Raul PS: Thanks for unveiling the secrets of scent detection! There are very very few persons out there that either know or share!

Great videos Nate, I've been watching a few over the past few days. The way you explain it fantastic and easy for owners to follow, I've even recommended your videos to my clients and I've just purchased you're manual.

Keep up the great work. Also will you be doing seperate video on how to teach the Markers? 😊

Is there a video on the first session with him Nate? I work with shelter dogs and I’m getting frustrated that I can’t seem to teach a simple sit 😢 I use the hand up command, but they tend to hop up instead of sit. I also tried upward leash pressure. Nope. And when I try to gently press down on the backend, then turn their head around to look at my hand 😣

I like how it sounds like a little bit of Pauly Shore from Encino Man when you say "Buuuuddy." Do you have any suggestions for fixing the side sit or side down position?

I've seen some trainers just use food to lure a dog into the "down" position. I'm curious to learn what is the advantage of using both pressure and food.

What collar are you using for Elvis? Looks like a flat collar?

How to do basic training on a dog that does not like treats or food? I have a GSD and who does basic commands, want to go advanced with him.

Is it too late to start leash pressure training if you've already started training lay down by treat luring?

Just to be

You are using word "free" then reward... Without using verbal commands only physical leash pressure... for down, sit and place...
