I use petrobras on both my JDM and Euro vehicles, SN+ certified but spec wise higher viscosity than mobil 1 on high engine temps, so technically superior, also costs about half (made in Brasil, I live in Colombia), I couldn't find it in the US when I was visiting so I bought royal purple for a friends car, I was told it is up there with the best. As for the diesel oil thing, I use 15w40 on an old subaru EJ16 engine (250+k miles), it is both CK4 and SN certified, I choose to use this oil because it is really detergent, it keeps my piston rings clean, since I use it there is no longer smoke on cold starts.

I only use European oils in my two vehicles, as agreed and as recommended by my two Independent mechanics for our 2019 Volvo XC40 and the 2023 Lexus ES300h.

This is why I use pentosin or liqui moly for European cars solves a lot of issues making sure it has the proper specifications

Do you think Chrysler 2.7L motor should run off of 5W-20 as in the 2010 ? I only use 10W-30 and maybe 5W-30 synthetic for a 1999 2.7L . There cam tensioner plastic was gouged out deeply mines never seen it and that 2010 can't stop rattling . No changes in their 2.7L engine you could not pay me use 5W-20 unless that car stays in very cold climates .

I usually go by the manufacturers spec, if my manufacturer is not listed with the appropriate spec on the bottle I don't usually use it. For my BMW I use LL04 for example. I might vary the grade slightly depending on how it's running and how much oil it's using. Older more worn engines will need a thicker viscosity if they are burning a lot of oil.

Here in the EU the owners manual states which typ of oil to use. On the oil bottle the typ and oil is stated and for which auto manufacturer it is approved for.

Have a volvo gas L5 and I used pennzoil euro L which is formulated for both diesel and gas. I heard that diesel oil is much better so I will see how it turns out.

For VW/Audi ACEA standards are meaningless; the oil must meet the VW/Audi specification for the motor in the vehicle. Depending on the year and gas or diesel will dictate what oil specification you need for the vehicle.

VW/Audi have had specifications starting with (if my memory is correct!) starting with the 2000 model year vehicles and have been known to change from year to year.

In many cases, the newer specification supersede the old ones but not always. The current specification for some models is either 508.00 or 509.00, for vehicles using light weight (0-20w oil). This standard IS NOT backward compatible!

VW/Audi have been in the past (when I was dealing with it at the dealership service level) quite strict about using the correct specification oil in determining warranty coverage for internal engine repairs. Just for your readers info.

In early 2000’s when bmw started making the USA use the “oil life monitor” and based it upon REAL PAO syn oils and gave us crap grip III and it smudged BAD.

Those are the same oil, they just updated their labeling design. Both oils have the same certification.

I am restoring a garage find 1960 Ford pickup (223 6 cylinder) I am sure that its original oil is unavailable (I suspect it was a 40 weight). I am willing to buy premium for the old warrior but still if I can get better oil for the same price I can change it more often. Walmart has good prices on Valvoline - what about Euro Blend? or 10w40 Hi Mileage (Its been parked for 30 years I suppose the seals could use any help they can get. recommendations??

A lot of politics involved, the Gov wants you to get max mpg, they could care less how long your engine lasts.

Oils carrying API claims only are generally lower quality as the additive treat is lower. Oils carrying API and ACEA claims are higher performance Oils and completely compatible with bio fuel blends as they have been tested against them in specific qualification tests...
